The anime world is already full of incredible content without even considering the new shows that are constantly being introduced to the genre. With franchises like Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Bleach running in around 300 to 600 episodes each, it is no wonder anime fans have a hard time keeping up with all the new content.

7 NOMINEE: Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! Is About Creating Anime

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken

An anime about creating anime is the perfect anime to start off a list of the best anime of the year. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! is the exact sort of meta content that nobody asked for but everybody needed in 2020. While the world was shut inside, Mizusaki, Kanamori, and Asukasa were exploring the creative world inside their heads by drawing and animating whatever random ideas popped up.

The way Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! transitions between the real world and the world of imagination by shifting animation styles is brilliant. The variety of animation styles that this show utilizes in just the first season earned it a nomination for best animation as well as best anime of the year. Good timing and great animation are not the only things that push this anime to the top of the genre, but fans interested in finding out more will have to dive into the anime itself.

6 NOMINEE: Jujutsu Kaisen Has A Great Cast & Story About Curses

tokyo jujutsu kaisen

Watching Itadori seamlessly adapt to the world of curses that surrounds him is incredibly entertaining. Even before considering the number of other fantastic characters that surround him, fans will find themselves smiling at the dual personality hidden within Itadori's body.

The main cast that guides fans through the world of Jujutsu Kaisen is incredibly unique, yet still as relatable as the very best anime characters. Megumi's animalistic shikigami is both adorable and deadly when mixed with his stoic personality and combat skills. Nobara's hammer and nail fighting style combine to create one of the most unique projectile-based characters who have made it into anime in years. Last but not least, Gojo's smirk and control of infinity are cool enough to make viewers truly baffled when trying to find Jujutsu Kaisen's resident best boy.

5 NOMINEE: Great Pretender Is Beautifully Animated By WIT STUDIO

Phone _ Edamura _ Edamame

The Great Pretender deserves its spot on this list because of the incredible animation that WIT STUDIO put behind the plot of this Netflix Original. Following a team of international con men through the United States is nothing new in terms of plot, but no heist show or film has ever been quite so beautiful.

What makes this incredible animation even more impressive is the fact that WIT STUDIO didn't even have a manga to look to when storyboarding their animation. Or, perhaps it was precisely this freedom from a source material that allowed Great Pretender to literally shine brighter than its anime peers.

4 NOMINEE: Dorohedoro Follows A Character With A Reptile Head

Dorohedoro

Kaimen, Panda, the entire cast of Beastars, and even Rak from Tower of God worked together in 2020 to break down the negative stereotypes that come from designing characters like animals in anime.  Honestly, who could have imagined that so many of the best anime series in 2020 were either led or supported by anthropomorphic animals?

The fact that Kaimen has a reptilian's face has little to do with Dorohedoro's success as an anime in 2020, but few can deny just how cool this protagonist looks. While Kaimen explores the world he was written into, he takes advantage of his magical immunity to fight evil sorcerers like the one who transformed his normal human head into the head of a reptile.

3 NOMINEE: Appare-Ranman! Is About A Resident Science Buff & Cowardly Samurai

Kosame _ APPARE_RANMEN!

Appare-Ranman! is the type of anime that would arise if Zenitsu from Demon Slayer and Senku from Dr. Stone were stuck together in the middle of the ocean with only a steamboat and each other as company. The ensuing conversations and conflicts that spur up would be as hilarious as they are scientifically enlightening.

In the case of Appare-Ranman!, Sorrano is the resident science buff with an interest in mechanical engineering while Ishikki is the resident samurai with a cowardly approach to battle. Both characters deserve their own introduction, but because of the way each bounces off of the other so seamlessly throughout the anime, it is difficult to separate them even here.

2 NOMINEE: Beastars Puts Anthropomorphic Animals In Anime Form

Legoshi _ Haru _ Beastars

Unless fans of Beastars read the manga prior to watching the anime, nobody wants to hear about how they were able to predict this show's success. The number of anime fans that still refuse to watch anime series that cast anthropomorphic animals is surprisingly large, but the drama and action in Beastars are too great to deny a show about bipedal zoo animals a chance in the limelight.

For those that are still hesitating to binge through Beastars, perhaps its position on a list of the best anime of 2020 will be enough to pull hesitant fans into Cherryton Highschool. While it is true that Cunchyroll users are not the only anime fans with an opinion on the best anime, they are right for appreciating the drama Legoshi experiences when he is accused of killing one of his classmates.

1 WINNER: Jujutsu Kaisen Has Impressed Fans So Far

Toudou _ Itadori _ Jujutsu Kaisen

As of 2020, Jujutsu Kaisen is the anime to beat. Thanks to some incredible animation, incredibly fast pacing, and a combination of the horror and battle anime genres, Jujutsu Kaisen has cemented itself into the larger anime culture. Fans are already comparing this new series to anime staples like Bleach and Naruto. This comparison alone speaks volumes when considering how seemingly untouchable both of those shows are in the eyes of anime fans.

Hopefully readers are keeping up with this incredible series in 2021, because the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc is yet another example of just how incredibly well this series handles classic anime tropes. If Jujutsu Kaisen can continue moving forward at this pace, it will surely join the ranks of Dragon Ball and Naruto after a few more years of steady content.
