Every new year brings new anime antagonists to compare to anime staples like Frieza and Hisoka.

Crunchyroll's annual anime awards have given fans who count themselves among the streaming services viewership another chance to voice their opinion on their favorite anime. These awards recognize everything from best character design to the best anime protagonists of 2020.

Each year brings new anime, new protagonists, and new antagonists that can combat the powerful protagonists. Though many fans watch shows for their protagonists as they like seeing them vanquish evil and achieve their goals, other people prefer the darker side of things and find themselves identifying with the more sinister cahracters.

7 Nominee: En Tortures The Leads Through The First Season Of Dorohedoro

En _ Dorohedoro _ Antagonist

The En family torments Kaimen and Nikaido throughout the entire first season of Dorohedoro. At the top of this maniacal family En himself sits in a cloud of dark smoke that has the power to turn anything it touches into a fungi.

What makes En such an incredible antagonist isn't his ability to rule over others with his strength, though this is well appreciated by fans of battle Shonen anime. En reaches to fans when he lets go of his villainy to enjoy his obsession with mushrooms. Watching En raise a garden of mushrooms or casually accept a plate of food covered in mushrooms is as hilarious as it is intimidating.

6 Nominee: Jujutsu Kaisen Features A Dual Protagonist/Antagonist (Yuji Itadori and Ryomen Sekuna)

Sukuna Using Sorcery Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen surely surprised the anime world with its masterful portrayal of Shonen battle anime tropes, but the shows real bread winner is its protagonist/antagonist. The split personality of Yuji Itadori and Ryomen Sekuna that share Itadori's body combines to create one of the most captivating anime characters that fans have seen in years. Few will forget the moment that Itadori denied Sukuna the right to control his body in the second episode of the first season.

By combining an overpowered protagonist with an overconfident villainJujutsu Kaisen managed to skyrocket to the top of the anime game much more quickly than fans expected.

5 Nominee: Rachel Subverts The Antagonist Stereotypes In Tower Of God

Rachel talking down to Bam

Rachel is not the sort of antagonist that you might expect from a Shonen battle anime, but that is what makes her such a captivating character throughout the first season of Tower of God. As a natural counter to Bam, the shows overpowered protagonist and a perfectly innocent, loyal friend, Rachel is weak and distrustful.

Despite Rachel's betrayal and Bam's status as the protagonist, Rachel has always been one of the most relatable characters in the fantasy-inspired world of ToG. Perhaps this is what makes her such a successful character, even if she is the villain.

4 Nominee: Akito Sohma Has Gained The Sympathy Of Some Viewers (Fruits Basket)

Akito and Yuki _ Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket isn't as visually dramatic as many of the other anime on this list, but what it lacks in fantasy elements it makes up for in relatability. Like Rachel from Tower of God Akito Sohma is just a normal, overly praised human with little to no extra special abilities.

Fans of Fruits Basket may have learned to hate Akito Sohma since she reigns over Yuki like only an antagonist ever would, but no one can deny the fact that this spoiled young woman deserves a bit of sympathy.

3 Nominee: Echidna Constantly Gets In The Way Of The Lead (Re:ZERO - Starting Life In Another World)

Echidna from Re:Zero

Echidna's mastery of the six elemental forms of magic in Re:ZERO - Starting Life in Another World is enough to make most Shonen anime fans happy. Truthfully, Echidna counts as more of an anti-hero than a straight up villain, but the way this character steps in the way of the show's protagonist makes it clear that they are indeed the antagonist.

If Echidna could have just kept her power to herself, Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World would have turned out to be a completely different show.

2 Nominee: Overhaul Is Both Terrifying And Powerful (My Hero Academia)

my hero academia overhaul

Overhaul's terrifying monotonous voice is enough to cement his spot on this list, but is it enough to convince fans that he is the best anime antagonist of 2020?

It isn't clear whether Crunchyroll users voted for Overhaul because of his obsessive need for organization and cleanliness, or if it has to do with his powerful quirk. With just the touch of his finger, Kai Chisaki is able to deconstruct/destroy anything. It is exactly as overpowered as readers can imagine, and makes it very difficult for Deku to continue mastering his own quirk.

1 Winner: Ryomen Sukuna Provides A Fresh Take On The Role Of The Antagonist In Anime (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Sukuna Looking Down At Yuji Jujutsu Kaisen

Ryomen Sukuna earned the title of best anime antagonist from Crunchyroll's viewership for a number of reasons. The first reason has to do with Jujutsu Kaisen's protagonist Yuji Itadori. If Sukuna had managed to overcome Itadori's control of his body in the first couple of episodes, he surely would have had trouble relating to viewers.

The good cop/bad cop routine that Itadori and Sukuna have going for them is brilliant. Furthermore, Sukuna shares something in common with the viewers. While the protagonist of the show wanders through danger without a clue, both viewers and Sukuna are forced to watch. What could possibly be more relatable to a spectator than a character who is forced into spectating?
