Critical Role is arguably the most well-known Dungeons & Dragons actual play that exists. With two seasons under its belt, several comic lines, and an animated television series coming to Netflix thanks to fan support, the series has garnered a lot of support in the nerd community.

The second season follows the group called the Mighty Nein. The team consists of Fjord, Caleb, Nott, Jester, Caduceus, Beau, and Yasha. Each character has their own quirks and reasons for adventuring with the group. The smallest of the groups is Nott the Brave, a Goblin Arcane Trickster Rogue, played by Sam Riegel. There might be some things you don’t know about her, so here are ten, but beware of major spoilers.

10 She's An Alcoholic

Nott is known for having a bottle or flask in her hands, but it isn’t quite explained how deep down her need for alcohol is. When she is facing off against creatures that are 2 to 5 times her size daily, she needs a little bit of liquid encouragement, which she has handy, especially after getting an enchanted flask from Pumat Sol.

Her alcoholism is tied to her change from the past. Caring for her friend, it is Jester who has to step in and save Nott from herself. Nott has a moment of clarity but shifts it back into jokes by saying she’d only drink from 11:30 am to 11 pm.

9 Nott the Hungry

One of Nott’s quickest statements when meeting new people is how much she is not like the other Goblins, specifically in the fact that she does not eat human children. However, it is later found out that she did actually eat some part of a human child, referring to it as being like “goulash.”

Outside of babies, Nott has been known to eat a plethora of other critters. Beauregard and Nott share a liking for rats, though Nott prefers them uncooked. She has also said that on two separate occasions, she has eaten Frumpkin, Caleb’s familiar, though Frumpkin doesn’t act hostile towards her.

8 Friendly Fire

In Dungeons & Dragons, it is easy to accidentally kill the other members of your party or yourself. While Percy aided in the death of Vex in the first season by setting off a trap, he didn’t actually do the damage, therefore, he didn’t kill his party member.

Nott on the other hand, literally pulled the trigger that ended up killing a fellow M9er. During a battle in Duplicity, where Caduceus was already hurt, Nott fired an explosive arrow into the small area. She does a great job of killing the incubus, but the explosive arrow’s area of effect causes Caduceus to fail his last death save, killing him.

7 First Campaign Character Played by Opposite Sex

During the events of the first campaign, Chris Perkins appeared as a guest playing the Goliath Fighter Shale. It was the first time on Critical Role that a character had a player that was of the opposite sex. Other guests have done this as well, including Mark Hulmes as Calianna and Liam O’Brien as Lieve'tel Toluse.

Nott is the first main campaign character to have a player of the opposite gender. Played by Sam Reigel, Nott has the distinction of being voiced by a male voice actor, though her being a Goblin lends very well to the crackly voice that he has created for her.

6 Petty Theft

Nott the Brave by @MatKolbeckArt

Like most Goblins, Nott the Brave is a collector of sorts. In one of her first, and most memorable lines, she and Jester discuss her collection of sticks, which are walking sticks, rocks, which are jewels, and other eccentric items. While this could have been a goof, Nott makes no qualms about continuing her collection by stealing anything she can get her hands on.

Across the campaign, Nott has stolen 128 items. These items include several rings, multiple potions, a significant amount of coin, a doorknob, four horses and a pistol. Though we learn what she is doing with most of the items, she does have some sticky fingers, especially around shiny objects.

5 She Was Originally A Halfling

Nott the Brave has not always been Nott the Goblin. In her lifetime, she has been two people because she was originally a Halfling. Born Veth Brenatto, she grew up in a halfling village and had a family with a man named Yeza Brenatto. When Goblins attacked her village of Felderwin, she distracted them long enough to let her family getaway.

Captured and tortured by the Goblins after she burned the chief’s face with acid, she was taken to a witch and drowned in a river. When she awoke, she was a Goblin. Sam has stated that this was the effect of a Resurrection spell, though no further details have been specified.

4 Anagram

The name Nott the Brave and Veth Brenatto seem to be wild extremes for naming conventions, yet they hold a secret in them. While Nott has stated multiple times that she chose the name because of everything she was not, she may have been hiding the truth, which is extremely common for her.

This is because Nott the Brave and Veth Brenatto are anagrams. This means that the letters of her name are rearranged to spell a new word. While fans don’t know which name came first, it was likely Nott the Brave. This small detail eluded fans for a short time before Veth’s name was written out for the fans to put two and two together.

3 Twisted Version of Herself

Sam’s take on the character required him to look at what the past she was avoiding was and build up from that. One way he did this was to take Veth’s vices and intensify them to incredible levels. One of the most apparent was her drinking of alcohol. While Veth enjoyed a glass of wine every so often, Nott is an alcoholic.

Her penchant for theft is also one of these. As Veth, she collected things that were interesting to her. As Nott, that interest broadened, and she began stealing to add to her collections. Lastly, her behaviors, in general, became twisted. While Veth was a generally shy girl, Nott is sneaky and wants to remain unseen as much as possible.

2 She Has 2 Sons

Caleb and Nott were introduced together because they had bonded deeply. As Nott explains it “Caleb and I have a very special relationship. It is that of a parent and a child. But I am the parent. You do understand that, correct? I protect him. He’s my boy.” She keeps this up for the whole campaign too.

However, we also learn that Nott, as Veth, has a blood son named Luc. Over the course of the campaign, Nott has been sending packages containing money and trinkets to Luc, though this is only found out when she returns home. Luc doesn’t believe she is really his mother though, so he rejects Nott, which causes her fear about telling him the truth.

1 Tiny Yet Deadly

Nott is not technically the deadliest member of the Mighty Nein as Caleb has 14 more kills than her. She also doesn’t have the most kills per episode as that honor goes to Caduceus who had 32 kills in one episode. Where she does shine through is her longevity.

She has amassed 54 kills across 32 episodes, which is the longest range out of the Mighty Nein. It is important to remember that one of those kills is Caduceus, so she is also the deadliest toward the Mighty Nein as well. While she may not be the deadliest in one day, give her a few and she can show you what she can do.
