The major fun of Dungeons & Dragons is the fact that everyone can bring their own characters and narrative sensibilities to the game. Sure, it’s a fantasy game at its core, but there are so many different places and ways to play that lots of genres can be represented and therefore kinds of characters to bring to the table.

The amazing Critical Role takes that idea and pushes it to the brink, with a lot of really incredible characters, brought to life by voice actors who give their all to playing them, making them all so incredibly lovable that there are a bunch of great characters to choose as a favorite.

10 Nott The Brave

Nott the Brave is a halfling who became a goblin after being captured with her family by a goblin clan. The character has a somewhat tragic story, having to leave behind her husband and son to live life as a goblin, since she was no longer welcome in her hometown. Her fairy tale ending of getting to become a halfling again and reunite with her family is all the sweeter because of all of the hardship she has suffered.

9 Beauregard Lionett

Beauregard is one of the coolest characters in the series. She’s a monk but doesn’t really seem to have much of a monk-like attitude toward life.

She dresses in great combat gear, usually with a crop top showing off killer abs. She has a pretty carefree attitude and just wants people to live their lives and not interfere with what she’s trying to do, which makes her a pretty fun character to follow.

8 Keyleth

Keyleth is a fun character because she should be pretty confident and serene as a druid. Instead, she’s a bit shy and not very good at talking to people. Because this is Dungeons & Dragons, and the characters’ abilities are based on rolling dice, her charisma must be pretty low, since she’s not very good at persuading people to help her party out in difficult situations. Still, she knows what she believes and she’s not afraid to question her friends when she thinks they’re making rash decisions.

7 Jester Lavorre

Jester is one of the most popular characters in Critical Role and for good reason. She’s incredibly cute, with blue skin and blue freckles. She’s very eager to participate in things, and she gets excited easily by new situations. She’s mischievous and likes sweets, and she’s often causing chaos due to her devotion to the Traveler, who she feels she is serving by doing so. It’s very easy to like her and to want good things for her when listening to the series.

6 Yasha Nydoorin

Yasha is very surprising when one considers what she looks like. She seems very fierce and intimidating, and she’s larger than most of the other characters as well as stronger. But she’s actually surprisingly awkward around people, and she has some fears that she thinks make her a bad person to travel with, since cowards aren’t especially helpful in most situations. But she’s also amazing in battle, fighting fiercely and effectively, which is a weird juxtaposition with her usual personality.

5 Mollymauk Tealeaf

Mollymauk is a really interesting character because he’s so unusual. He comes across as something of the high-class bad boy of any situation, since he’s very interested in living extravagantly and pursuing somewhat hedonistic pleasures.

He’s primarily interested in doing anything that seems like it will be exciting, regardless of whether or not it’s legal. He’s also a huge liar, often just saying things without carrying whether or not anyone believes what he’s saying. It makes him a fun character to have around, since he doesn’t seem to have any bad intentions, just mostly selfish ones.

4 Scanlan Shorthalt

Everyone loves a good comic relief character, and Scanlan is exactly that character in Vox Machina. He’s not all that helpful when it comes to strategizing or figuring out next steps during problematic situations. But he will always be on hand to make a lot of jokes and to make sure any situation that could be comedy gold will be comedy gold.

3 Caduceus Clay

Caduceus Clay doesn’t necessarily look like a character who would be very cheerful. As a cleric, he seems, like Keyleth, like he should be calmer and more serene. Instead, he completely subverts those expectations by instead being incredibly welcoming and cheerful among others. He’s very considerate and protective of his friends, and he’s surprisingly wise, despite not being all that smart. He’s a very endearing character and addition to the group.

2 Vax’ildan Vessar

Vax'ildan holding a dagger

Vax’ildan is a character who is catnip for people who like brooding anime protagonists. He’s very serious and keeps his feelings to himself for the most part. But he also tends to subvert these tropes, making him very interesting to follow. He likes to pull pranks on people, and he’s able to get by in a lot of complicated social situations with his easy going nature.

1 Vex’ahlia de Rolo

Vex is Vax’s twin sister, and it’s very hard to resist characters who are twins. It’s so easy to play their personalities against each other, making them both seem more interesting. Vex is outwardly very self-confident and outgoing, which she uses to hide her insecurities. Where Vax is quieter and more reserved because of his lack of self-confidence, Vex is louder and charismatic in order to keep those feelings at bay.
