UPDATE: Matt Mercer posted a correction on Twitter, stating that none of the cast members of Critical Role appear in Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. However, Paramount sponsored an episode for the series. "Internet is gonna internet, hehe," he said. "Just to adjust expectations, we are not in the film nor involved in the production. Paramount was nice enough to sponsor an episode of CR, though!" The original story appears below.
A new report seemingly confirms that cast members of Critical Role will make cameo appearances in the upcoming Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Per People, some cast members of Critical Role will make a cameo appearance in the film, confirming rumors of such that stemmed from San Diego Comic-Con 2022. However, it's remained unclear if all or only some of the cast would appear in the film. Recent updates to Wikipedia reveal that Ashley Johnson, also of The Last of Us fame, and Taliesin Jaffe are listed as appearing in the movie on their respective pages, while the Wikipedia page for the film only notes that "cast members" from Critical Role cameo in Honor Among Thieves. It remains unclear if only Johnson and Jaffe will appear or if fans might also see Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Laura Bailey, Liam O'Brien, Sam Riegel or Travis Willingham in the D&D movie.
Cameos in the D&D Movie
Apart from the Critical Role cameos, another group intrinsically linked to Dungeons & Dragons briefly appears in the film. The core cast of the 1980s animated Dungeons & Dragons series are seen during a competition in Neverwinter during the film, played by Luke Bennet (Bobby), Moe Sasegbon (Diana), Trevor Kaneswaran (Eric), Emer McDaid (Sheila), Seamus O'Hara (Presto) and Edgar Abram (Hank). The creative team for Honor Among Thieves previously revealed that the characters would cameo in the film, along with a well-known D&D player.
Honor Among Thieves Doesn't Mimic Jumanji
Although Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves plays homage to notable characters and creators from the popular TTRPG, co-writer/co-director John Francis Daley confirmed the film would not mimic the recent Jumanji films by making the main cast play characters within a game. "[T]his is not Jumanji," he said, referring to how Jumanji has Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan play video game characters that modern-day teenagers take over the bodies of when transported within the game.
"We talked about it, but we made a decision that we did not want to break the fourth wall," he continued. "There's so much fun to be had just in the world of D&D that we didn't have to bring it into our world and show kids playing." Daley's writing and directing partner Jonathan Goldstein added that it would be "sort of limiting the absolute scope of this world if we were to sort of put it through the lens of a game being played."
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves opens in theaters on March 31.
