SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part 2," the second installment of this year's Arrowverse crossover.

Lex Luthor has served his purpose.

In "Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part 2," the latest installment of this year's Arrowverse crossover, Lex stole the Book of Destiny right from underneath the Monitor's nose. He used it to jump from world to world, killing the Superman of every Earth along the way. Tyler Hoechlin's Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Iris West-Allen took off in hot pursuit to stop him.

Their first stop was in Metropolis on Earth-75. Iris gave Clark and Lois the heads up about Lex, explaining that the Monitor had brought the villain back to fill his deadly purpose. "According to Iris, Lex is jumping from universe to universe, killing off Supermen," she explained.

"If one of them is the Kryptonian paragon..." Clark realized, for Lois to finish, "It's game over. We need to find this Earth's Superman before Lex jumps here and offs him."

But they were already too late to save Earth-75's Superman. As they turned the corner, they encountered a giant screen playing breaking news: "Superman Dead!" The screen showed the image above: Lois sobbing over Superman's dead body in a pile of rubble, while his cape flapped like a flag in the wind. The image is an homage to DC Comics' "Death of Superman."

"Lex Luthor kills Man of Steel... disappears into thin air," the chyron read.

"Lex killed him and breached out," Lois pointed out.

"He won't stop until we're all dead," Clark mused.

And so Clark, Lois and Iris went on a multiverse-hopping journey that led them to Brandon Routh's Kingdom Come Superman, the Paragon of Truth. They found him first, so -- when Lex arrived -- he came up with a devious plan: "I never thought I'd say this, but I'm tired of killing Supermen. So much more fun making Superman kill Superman."

With that, Lex used the Book of Destiny to harden Kingdom Come Superman's heart. They engaged in a violent battle, until Lois knocked Lex out and took the Book back for herself. She managed to talk Kingdom Come Superman down and convinced him to join them in the process.

"Lex Luthor played his role," the Monitor announced, causing Lex to curtsy in response. "He led you to him."

"Yeah? How many more people did he hurt to do that?" Supergirl demanded. "You think you're a good guy, but you're not."

"I think he's kind of neat," Lex interjected.

As a result, the team found the Paragon of Truth, but at the cost of Kara's trust in the Monitor. As the Paragon of Hope, she has an important role to play in the Crisis to come, so hopefully Mar Novu's "ends justify the means" methodology hasn't tarnished his endgame.

"Crisis on Infinite Earths" continues in The Flash on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. After the winter hiatus, the crossover will conclude on Tuesday, Jan. 14 in Arrow at 8 p.m. ET/PT and in DC's Legends of Tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
