The film is part of the studio's long-brewing Universal Monsters Universe, which officially launches in June with "The Mummy." Overseen by producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, the shared cinematic universe will feature new takes on such classic movie monsters as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man and Frankenstein's monster.

The original "Creature From the Black Lagoon" followed a group of scientists as they ventured into the Amazon on an expedition that goes horribly wrong. It spawned two sequels, "Revenge of the Creature" and "The Creature Walks Among Us."

Beall wrote the 2013 crime drama "Gangster Squad," as well as the screenplay for the upcoming "Legend of Conan," produced by Morgan. He also served as executive producer on the CBS series "Training Day," which is ending after 13 episodes due to the death star Bill Paxton.

The "Creature From the Black Lagoon" remake doesn't have a director or a release date.
