Actor Daniela Pineda is taking on one of the most iconic characters in anime with her role of Faye Valentine in Netflix's live-action reboot of Cowboy Bebop. She knows that she doesn't look exactly like Faye, and she has very good reasons for not caring.
In a story on her Instagram, Pineda responded to criticisms about her casting in the show and the costume she wears that followed the Cowboy Bebop first look images. In the video, which has since gone viral, she explained, "I just wanted to address a couple of things that sort of keep coming up in the comments amongst fans," and then went on to make it clear that the reason she isn't a perfect match for Faye's body type is because the animated character's proportions don't exist in reality.
"First I wanted to apologize to the fans that I do not anatomically match the Faye Valentine character," Pineda said. She summarized Faye's 'anatomy' as "Six foot, double-D size breasts, two-inch waist" and sarcastically remarked, "You know, they looked everywhere for that woman, and they couldn't find her. It's kinda weird. So they just went with my short ass. I know, am I right?"
Driving the point home, Pineda continued, "There was talk about, like, 'put Daniela in a time machine and maybe give her different parents so she has different genetic information to sort of make her look better?' It proved to be too complicated."
"The other thing I wanted to bring up was, I wanted to apologize that the outfit I'm wearing is not exactly what she wears in the anime," Pineda said, referring to complaints her costume doesn't look like Faye's usual get-up in the anime -- which is implausibly short and thin and sometimes appears to be defying the laws of gravity. "You know, we tried, but doing stunts in tissue paper -- things disappear, they rip... That original costume, they made a couple of them, but like I said, they got sort of slurped up in my various crevices, never to be retrieved again. So, we really built something that could withstand the test of time."
In spite of the supposed inaccuracies, Pineda appears to be having a good time working on Cowboy Bebop. When the show premieres on Netflix on Nov. 19, fans may decide that she is, after all, perfect for the role of Faye Valentine.
