In a dream world, the Cowboy Bebop Netflix remake would cover every detail (and then some), and fans would get every crumb possible from this series. But that's a dream world.
Regardless, there are some classic focal points of the 1998 Cowboy Bebop space western, adventure-filled show that fans are hoping to see come to life. With John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, it's exciting to see the characters fans have watched for years come to life. So, where is the storyline heading? Will the audience see their favorite characters or a completely new version of Cowboy Bebop?
7 The Origin Of The Bebop Ship
Like everything in this show, there's a reason why Jet bought a fishing ship and now works as a bounty hunter. Starting his crime-fighting life as a police officer in the Inter-Solar System Police (ISSP), he worked hard at his job and earned a reputation for it. During this time, he had a relationship with Alisa.
Unfortunately, Alisa left him with no explanation, and Jet discovered that his partner Fad was roped in with the syndicate. And as Jet learned more about how corrupt the ISSP actually was, it seemed like the final rope holding him back, so he packed up and left. Thus, the Bebop ship began its journey, followed by a crew.
6 Finding Ein, The Corgi Companion
The beloved corgi, Ein, is not just a random dog Spike and Jet picked up one day. Their target, Abdul Hakim, is wanted because he stole a valuable lab dog. As the hunt continues for their bounty target, Spike and Jet can eventually use Ein and lure out their target.
As the plan begins to unfold and the antics of the chase take hold, the fans learn about Ein's genetically-enhanced intelligence. And so at the start of Cowboy Bebop, the first of three things that Spike hates joins the team: an animal.
5 Child Prodigy Called Edward
Though there seem to be no signs of Edward in the Netflix trailer, who wouldn't love to see this red-haired character brought to life? Ed is a child prodigy when it comes to hacking.
Referring to herself in the third person, Ed becomes part of the team after working with them on the bounty for the hacker vandalizing Earth. But Ed's character isn't just for the occasional mood-lightening joke. Ed becomes an essential part of the team.
4 Faye's Debt Causes Her Trouble
Faye is, in some aspects, a mystery. After being cryogenically frozen because of a severe injury, her entire identity was erased during a rock shower on Earth. And when she's awoken and cured of her injuries, Doctor Bacchus takes advantage of her amnesia. He truly is the reason she lives the life she does, to attempt to pay off the debt he burdened her with right after waking up.
Her backstory is essential in understanding why she takes the jobs she does and why she seems like she's constantly on the run from something. While everyone in the show has their own past that they're running from, their histories are important for the team dynamic, especially in different scenarios.
3 Spike Carries The Weight Of The Past
Spike's right eye is replaced with an artificial eye after an accident, causing him to lose it. He says his right eye always sees the past from that day on while his artificial eye sees the present. As Spike continually holds on to this past, the memories and emotions surrounding them seem to cast a shadow over his work. However, in his line of work, he meets people who remind him to let go of the past. In these discussions, the audience sees a little more just how much the past impacts him each time.
As a lazy and seemingly indifferent character, there are moments where his kindness shows through. And in those moments, the audience seems to see an alternate version of Spike. But is this the Spike from before or present?
2 Vicious Is A Reminder Of The Past
There is no surprise that Vicious and Spike, the former pushing to be the leader of the Red Dragon Syndicate, and the latter with no interest in the position but still pushed towards it, would be at odds. But once the pieces start moving and Vicious becomes head of the syndicate, it seems it's only a matter of time before the two meet again. Faye, falling into the trap of fake bounty on Spike's old mentor.
Thus the reunion of old enemies begins. Though the syndicate was technically looking for Spike since day one, Vicious is able to put a face and a history to this piece of Spike's past that had been a little blurry for the audience until then.
1 Sometimes Filler Is Needed
Even with shorter series, a filler episode can be fun to remember. In Cowboy Bebop, the episode "Mushroom Samba" is a bit of a nice break in between the heavier episodes. Seeing Ed and Ein go on their own adventure is a time in and of itself. The two seem to be followed by mischief.
As viewers watch a separate bounty hunt go down on the side, Ed and Ein bring the mushrooms dropped in the scuffle between Domino Walker and Shaft back to the ship. The audience then watches each of the crew members experience their own hallucination. Though each did have an underlying meaning for the characters themselves, no matter how vague, it was also a visually entertaining episode.
