Covers of the Week — July, 11

Each Monday (or in this case Tuesday, thanks to Comic-Con International), staff writers Kevin Melrose and Steve Sunu discuss their five favorite covers from the previous Wednesday’s new comic releases, selecting from among them CBR’s Cover of the Week. Then, at the end of each month, they choose from the weekly winners — you guessed it! — a Cover of the Month.

This week brings the Comedian getting into the swing of things, Parker plotting a huge heist, more dead (and undead) than you can shake a stick at, and the first issue of the Second Coming.

“Before Watchmen: Minutemen” #2, by Darwyn Cooke (DC Comics)

Darwyn Cooke’s covers always evoke an iconic feel, and “Before Watchmen: Minutemen” #2 is no different. Cooke’s eye for detail and subtlety is apparent in everything from the lines on the bat to the creases in the uniform to the intricate pattern in the background. However, it’s the devil-may-care expression on the Comedian’s face that really sells this and shows how well Cooke understands what makes an incredible cover image. — Steve Sunu

“Punk Rock Jesus” #1, by Sean Murphy (Vertigo)

To kick off his new miniseries centering on the celebrity clone of Jesus Christ, Sean Murphy (“Joe the Barbarian,” “Hellblazer”) fuses punk imagery and sacrilege — the two have a long history — with the inverted cross, the logo lettering that appears as if it were cut from magazines and spray-painted onto a wall and an American flag that (I think) is hung in distress. However, my favorite elements of the cover are the most subtle ones: the fingerprint on the face, the stigmata on the wrist that doubles as a gun sight, and the splatter of black across the bottom that resembles palm fronds. — Kevin Melrose

“Richard Stark’s Parker: The Score,” by Darwyn Cooke (IDW Publishing)

As elegant as IDW Publishing’s cover design is for Darwyn Cooke’s adaptation of the “Parker” books, it creates a rigid template — the field of white consuming more than one-third of the space, and the type crowding the image at the top. Yet, they work, even here, with the buildings and the dozen figures depicted in murky browns and shadowy blacks It’s lovely. — Kevin Melrose

“The Walking Dead” #100, by Charlie Adlard (Image Comics)

Although Charlie Adlard’s gatefold cover for the series’ milestone issue is far from new — Image and Skybound premiered it months ago — it’s still stunning. Adlard really broke the bank on this one: all of the characters who have died so far in “The Walking Dead” presented in colorful detail, spread out behind a forlorn Rick Grimes, in black and white, is the perfect homage to the series’ longevity as well as a masterful demonstration of the artist’s talent. — Steve Sunu

COVER OF THE WEEK: “The Walking Dead” #100, by Frank Quitely (Image Comics)

We’ve seen Frank Quitely depict costumed superheroes, talking animals, criminal vampires and naked demons, but this is the first time I can recall him drawing an undead librarian. Okay, maybe she’s not a librarian, but whatever she is (or was) she’s inarguably horrifying, with her pink cat-eye glasses and colorless eyes. Oh, yeah, and her gaping, bloody maw. She was undoubtedly interrupted during first meal as a walker; it’s mostly likely someone whose book was overdue. — Kevin Melrose
