A behind-the-scenes photo from the set of Gotham teases the return of The Court of Owls in the DC Comics-based series' fifth and final season.

Posted on Instagram, a group poses for a candid picture dressed in hoods and bird-like masks, and brandishing a few weapons.

The Court of Owls first appeared in the second season of Gotham and have been playing a pivotal role in the show's rogues gallery ever since. In the show, they are a secret council running things in Gotham City, including at Wayne Enterprises.

They also orchestrated the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne and have ties to Ra's Al-Ghul.

Most of them including their leader, Sensei, were killed off except for the handful of their assassins, known as Talons, who did the killing. The Instagram photo indicates those survivors resurface and there may be big plans for them in Season 5.

The Owls are known for their agents named Talons, the most famous being William Cobb, who turned out to be Dick Grayson's great-grandfather in the comics. Grayson himself was even being groomed to become a Talon until Bruce Wayne adopted him.

Introduced in the New 52 relaunch of Batman, the Court of Owls was created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo. It was established that they had been operating and pulling strings in the shadows of Gotham City all along.

They became a force to be reckoned with among Batman's villains and have been a staple in Dark Knight lore and media ever since.

Fox announced back in May that Gotham was being renewed for its fifth season, which will be its last. It is currently in production.
