Ahead of next week's premiere of "Gotham," FOX has released several clips from the DC Comics-based series' upcoming third season.

The latest clips -- specifically from the first episode, titled "Burn the Witch" -- reveal several major plot points kicking the season off. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) is upping his public profile as he hijacks a press conference at the GCPD precinct to implore citizens to find the recently resurrected Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), offering a million dollar bounty for her capture. This dramatic public appearance could allude to Penguin running for Mayor of Gotham. This isn't a stretch, since several other iterations of the character have run for office -- as evident from the Adam West "Batman" series, "Batman Returns," and mot recently, in "Detective Comics" issue #23.3.

This development will inevitably tie into Jim Gordon's storyline, since the former detective, played by Ben McKenzie, has quit the police force to become a bounty hunter. Newcomer to the series, and Gordon's love interest for the season, is the peppy journalist Valarie Vale, as played by Jamie Chung, who informs Gordon of Cobblepot's bounty on Mooney's head. If Valarie's name sounds familiar, it's intentional -- she has been revealed to be the aunt of classic comics character, Vicki Vale. Gordon's love life will likely become even more complicated as the teaser for the season premiere also reveals the return of Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Gordon's love interest played by Morena Baccarin, whom he cut off contact with in the second season.

If Gordon didn't have enough trouble, collecting on that bounty will prove more than difficult, given that Fish Mooney has become the leader of a gang of super powered escapees from the Indian Hill facility underneath Arkham Asylum. Some of these escapees include a few familiar faces to comic fans, such as Solomon Grundy and the Mad Hatter, who will likely have a large role in the show, given the season title, "Mad City."

The events at Indian Hill have made Bruce Wayne more determined than ever to unravel the conspiracy inside Wayne Enterprises and by extension the city. While comic fans immediately recognized this secret group as the Court of Owls last season -- as created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo in the New 52 "Batman" series -- Bruce is just beginning to scratch the surface of what this cabal desires, and why they had his parents murdered. Bruce (David Mazouz) confronts the board members of Wayne Enterprises while a steadfast Alfred (Sean Pertwee) stands behind him, with an air of intimidation. It becomes apparent in the season premiere teaser that it's enough to make the Court feel threatened, as we get a quick glimpse of a masked assailant attacking Alfred with a wrist mounted blade. This is most likely Talon, who was confirmed to make an appearance this season as the Court of Owls' top assassin.

Yes, these clips give a good sense of where the show is going this season, but given the series' track record, there's bound to be many more twists and turns along the way.
