The Harry Potter books had some of the best couples with exceptional connections built over the years that captured fans' hearts. However, most of those couples didn't translate well on the big screen and lacked natural chemistry, taking fans out of the stories.
Many of the young actors grew up together, making it difficult for them to develop romantic connections, as they saw each other as siblings. Others had such little screen time that they couldn't form a natural bond that viewers enjoyed, and some were simply unbelievable together.
10 Ron And Lavender Were Awkward
Lavender began crushing on Ron and kissed him at a party after he led the Gryffindor Quidditch team to victory. From then, they spent almost all their free time together, although Ron frequently tried to avoid her. Lavender became clingy, whereas Ron was secretly harboring a crush on Hermione.
Lavender was Ron's first girlfriend, so it was bound to be awkward. However, they were exceptionally cringe-worthy, and the characters hardly ever interacted before their first kiss. Their relationship was just a way to make Hermione jealous and to help them both realize their feelings for one another.
9 Harry And Cho Hardly Interacted
Harry developed a crush on Cho long before they started dating in the books. After Cedric's death, Cho leaned into Harry for comfort. They went on dates in Hogsmeade and had a relatively healthy relationship.
However, in the films, they hardly spent time together. Harry and Cho had a few brief, short-sentenced conversations every once in a while, kissed, and then barely saw each other again. The actors' lack of chemistry, added to their minimal screen time, led to a relationship that wasn't a fan favorite.
8 Voldemort Didn't Return Bellatrix's Love
Bellatrix was hopelessly devoted to Voldemort, willing to take anyone's life, no matter the cost. The books didn't explicitly mention their relationship, but later, it became canon. The Cursed Child revealed that between Voldemort's return and the Battle of Hogwarts, Bellatrix got pregnant and gave birth to his child.
While to Voldemort, it was likely a strategic way to carry on his legacy, it was much deeper for Bellatrix. On-screen, they lacked as much chemistry as they did in the books, and the imbalance in their relationship was obvious.
7 Tonks And Lupin's Relationship Was Sudden
Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks began dating but faced internal struggles, as Lupin worried he'd harm her while in his werewolf form. Eventually, they married in a small ceremony and got pregnant. Before the Battle of Hogwarts, Tonks gave birth to their son, Teddy, and they appointed Harry as his godfather.
While their relationship was authentic and drawn out in the books, it was sudden and random in the films. The actors seemed stiff and lacked chemistry, making it feel unbelievable. If the movies had given them more time together, they might've developed a better bond, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
6 Viktor And Hermione's Age Gap Was Inappropriate
Viktor Krum, a world-famous Quidditch player, came to Hogwarts to participate in the Triwizard Tournament. He asked Hermione to the Yule Ball, and they dated for the rest of the school year. However, he was eighteen, while Hermione was only fourteen.
In addition to the inappropriate age gap, they lacked chemistry on the screen. It was obvious that Hermione would've preferred to go with Ron, which she confronted him about multiple times. While Viktor seemed to genuinely like Hermione, she viewed the relationship more casually, and the awkwardness translated onto the screen.
5 Bill And Fleur Came Out Of Nowhere
Fleur began dating Bill Weasley after the Triwizard Tournament when he came to Hogwarts with Molly to see Harry. Their relationship grew, and they spent time together at the Burrow as an engaged couple before getting married in the final installment.
However, in the films, Fleur seemed to disappear following the tournament, only to reappear to help smuggle Harry from Privet Drive. So when the trio was suddenly at the couple's wedding reception, it was confusing for viewers who didn't even know they were together. Consequently, the actors didn't have the opportunity to develop the chemistry the roles needed, and the relationship felt odd and rushed.
4 Ginny And Dean Had No Screen Time
In her fourth and fifth years, Ginny dated Dean, Harry, and Ron's roommate. They spent a lot of time together in the books, which made Ron extremely uncomfortable, but they had good chemistry. However, they had almost no screen time together, except for a few moments, including when the trio saw them kissing at the Three Broomsticks.
Because Ginny and Dean had such little time together, their relationship felt random, and their chemistry was unbelievable in the films. Unfortunately, like Lavender, it seemed like this relationship was simply a plot device to make Harry jealous.
3 Lucius And Narcissa Were Hardly Ever Together
Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy didn't spend much time together on screen; when they did, they didn't feel like a loving couple. While Lucius was a deadly and dangerous Death Eater, Narcissa wasn't, but she still tagged along with Voldemort's crew.
The two rarely interacted, and when they were together, they were too caught up in Voldemort's evil activities to seem like a married couple. Narcissa only showed affection for her son, caring more about Draco than anyone else. Additionally, the two actors didn't feel like anything more than colleagues.
2 Vernon And Petunia Only Bonded Over Dudley
Vernon and Petunia Dursley took Harry in as a baby but raised him as minimally as possible. Unfortunately, they kept him malnourished, locked him in a cupboard his entire childhood, and emotionally abused him. They also overly spoiled their son, Dudley, turning him into a huge brat.
The two seemed like an odd couple, as the only things they bonded over were their love for Dudley and their hatred for everything else. They also hardly ever directly interacted with one another on screen. While the actors were a staple in the movies' beginnings, they lacked the chemistry to make their relationship feel authentic.
1 Harry And Ginny Were Boring Together
Harry and Ginny built a great relationship over time in the books, starting as friends and eventually developing mutual crushes. First, Ginny was jealous of Harry and Cho, and then Harry was jealous of Ginny and Dean. Finally, they created a healthy relationship, married, and had children.
However, in the films, they felt extraordinarily bland and lacked any chemistry at all. In general, Ginny was much better in the books, and her connection with Harry was no exception. However, their relationship seemed to come out of nowhere, as the movies gave no real indication that Harry had feelings for her. Additionally, the two actors were stiff, likely because they grew up together, but fans didn't receive the on-screen relationship well.
