The wedding of Katherine "Kitty" Pryde and Piotr Rasputin was scheduled to go off without a hitch in X-Men: Gold's issue number 30. However, the on and off-ness of their relationship caused Kitty to back out at the very last second, spurred by an insensitive comment made by Piotr's sister and Kitty's best friend, Illyana. Members of the X-Men family watched on in shock as Kitty literally phased through the ground at the altar, leaving Piotr heartbroken and confused. Eventually Kitty came back at the reception and talked things out with Piotr, the later rejoined their friends and looked on as Gambit proposes to Rogue. Rogue accepted and the two were married in the wedding planned for Kitty and Piotr. While some long-time fans regarded this as poor writing, you can't deny the chutzpah the writers had to pull a bait and switch of that level.

While Rogue and Gambit have certainly also had their ups and downs over the years, we can't help but wonder if the abandoned Pryde-Rasputin wedding would've been better served being handed over to another worthy couple. Starting with Jean and Scott way back in the '60s, the X-Men have often engaged in relationships with their teammates, with varying degrees of success. Some of these couples would eventually translate well into the movie franchise, like Jean and Scott, but some not so much (looking at you, Iceman and Kitty). CBR takes a look at our favorite X-couples who we would've loved to have seen say "I do," in place of Rogue and Gambit.

15 PSYLOCKE AND ARCHANGEL

A founding member of the X-Men, Warren Worthington III has always been a bit of a playboy, especially during his Angel persona days. However, following his transformation into Archangel at the hands of Apocalypse, Warren became a much darker person due to the amount of trauma he was dealing with. If anyone understood his malaise of the soul, it would be Elisabeth Braddock, also known as Psylocke.

Psylocke had previously undergone a transformation herself, from a mild-mannered telepath to an intimidating ninja courtesy of Spiral. Psylocke spent years coming to terms with her predicament and saw a kindred spirit in Archangel. The two began an on and off again relationship in the mid-'90s during one of Scott Lobdells run on X-Men that continues into the present.

14 JUBILEE AND CHAMBER

Generation X was one of the best new titles to come out of the '90s. It featured a myriad of much-needed new mutants, but also included existing heroes like Jubilee and Banshee. While many members came and went throughout the series, the remaining four members: Jubilee, Husk, Chamber and M have stayed close.

During the conclusion of Generation X's second run, Jubilee, now with an adopted baby, is reverted back to her mutant state and is no longer a vampire (long story). She was in charge of a new class of students, along with Chamber and Husk, and became particularly close to the once standoffish Chamber. The two recently began a romantic relationship with each other and we can't wait to see where it goes.

13 FIRESTAR AND JUSTICE

One of the few superheroes to first appear in an animated series, Firestar went on to become one of Marvel's most popular characters. She originally debuted on the side of evil as a member of the White Queen's Hellions, but quickly changed sides and became a founding member of the New Warriors, where she met and fell in love with a fellow mutant, Justice.

Following the disbanding of the Warriors, both were recruited to be members of the Avengers which, along with Firestar's health issues, put a strain on the relationship causing them to take a break. Firestar would later become an X-Man and teacher at the Jean Grey School while Justice stayed with the Avengers. We're still waiting for these two to get back together.

12 X-23 AND HELLION

An angry loner, Laura Kinney, also known as X-23, was never one for meaningful relationships. This changed following the events of "Decimation" where she met Julian Keller, also called Hellion. A powerful telekinetic, Hellion and X-23 had an immediate attraction to each other and began a romantic relationship that lasted for a few years.

However, X-23's urges proved to be too much for Hellion, and the couple broke up. They have stayed in contact on and off throughout the years. When Lady Deathstrike cut Hellion's hands off, X-23 nearly ended her for revenge. During one of her solo titles, the two are reunited, though Laura feels like she is too ferocious and backs away from rekindling anything.

11 CANNONBALL AND BOOM-BOOM

Cannonball started out as the lanky, awkward county boy when he first joined the New Mutants. However, he eventually grew into a capable hero and leader in his own right, becoming second-in-command of Cable's rebooted New Mutants team, X-Force. He also began a romantic relationship with his X-Force teammate, Boom-Boom.

A runaway who eventually found a home with the New Mutants, then X-Force, Boom-Boom is a no-nonsense firecracker who instantly captivated Cannonball's attention. Following a dark interaction with Sabretooth, Boom-Boom took on a more serious persona. This, combined with Cannonball becoming a full-fledged X-Man, put a serious strain on the relationship that hit its breaking point when she was with Sunspot. We're hoping these two lovebirds can some day get back together.

10 EMMA FROST AND HAVOK

Havok Joe Quesada

Probably one of the most polarizing X-Men in history, Emma Frost famously switched from villainess to hero following the total ending of her team of Hellions. She became the headmistress of a new school for mutants, along with Banshee, and formed Generation X. Following the disbanding of the team, she joined the X-Men full-time.

However, Emma recently slipped back into her evil ways, bringing Alex Summers, aka Havok, along with her. They formed a new alliance to take down the X-Men following the elimination of Cyclops and, although it was never outright said, it was implied that the two shared an intimate relationship. It would've been a great twist if these two had ended up at the altar together.

9 DAZZLER AND LONGSHOT

One of the most tragically underused X-Men, Dazzler joined the team in the early '80s and quickly became a fan favorite. As an X-Man, she trained in hand-t0-hand combat, gained greater control over her powers and developed a romantic relationship with fellow teammate, Longshot. The two were together for several years before the team torn apart after entering the Siege Perilous.

Dazzler and Longshot re-emerged in different parts of the worlds, both suffering from amnesia. They would eventually find each other again, although both had changed so much that they weren't able to resume their relationship. This was further complicated with the presence of their adult child, Shatterstar. We're still holding out hope that these two end up together in the long run.

8 STORM AND WOLVERINE

Storm is one of the greatest leaders of the X-Men ever, which has come at a personal cost by putting the good fight before any intimate relationship. Following a rocky romance with Forge, Storm would eventually marry the Black Panther, though the marriage would be annulled shortly thereafter. One of the most surprising suitors we've seen her with is Wolverine.

Though in the mainstream reality, they only had a brief fling, during the "Days of Future Present" storyline, the two had become the future X-Men's power couple. An unexpected union of his ferocity and her gentleness, the coupling became popular among fans throughout the years, even leaking over into the cinematic universe in such films as X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Present.

7 CABLE AND DOMINO

A mutant with probability-altering powers, Domino first appeared in the early pages of the original X-Force. An expert marksman, she is also the lover of Cable and the lieutenant of his team. She would eventually become a full-fledged member of the X-Men, making her cinematic debut in this year's Deadpool 2.

Cable and Domino are the oldest of lovers, but their relationship would be on and off once they became a regular part of the X-Men's world. The two would often be on different teams at the same time, but would pick up their relationship when they occasionally saw each other. After she became a hero in her own right, it would've been nice to see these two get their happy ending.

6 SHATTERSTAR AND RICTOR

After years of speculation, Shatterstar and Rictor finally confirmed their intimate relationship in 2009 with a kiss in the pages of X-Factor. They became one of the first gay relationships regularly portrayed in a mainstream comic book, gaining praise from critics and readers alike. The two hit a rift with Shatterstar wanting to explore his newfound feelings with others as well as Rictor, who wanted a more monogamous approach to their relationship.

The relationship would hit another speed bump when their teammate, and Rictor's former lover, Rahne pretended Rictor was the father of her baby. This would come to be a lie, though the damage had already been done. The two would find themselves together on an inter-dimensional, time-traveling adventure that brought them back together.

5 STORM AND FORGE

The closest thing Storm has ever come to a great love story was with Forge. She first met him when he accidentally depowered her while under the influence of the Adversary. Once Forge regained his senses, he set out to make things right between himself and Storm. It took her a while, but Storm eventually forgave him and then fell in love with him.

The two would have a strong relationship for several years, leading Forge to wanting to take their relationship to the next level. He proposed and, at first, Storm was hesitant because of the chaos of their lives as X-Men. That pause was enough for Forge to call it all off, even though Storm confessed she was going to say yes.

4 HAVOK AND POLARIS

The second "power couple" of the X-Men franchise, the brother of Cyclops and the daughter of Magneto made an unusual pairing, but it worked. Havok and Polaris joined the team right around the same time and remained an on and off again couple for decades. The two co-founded the government-sanctioned X-Factor team, with Polaris taking over as leader after Havok's departure.

The couple actually made it to the wedding stage, but Havok broke it off at the last minute, triggering Polaris's unstable condition. They would stay estranged for years, however they made peace with each other right before Havok turned into a villain. Reuniting him with the love of his life would've been a nice touch for his redemption.

3 NIGHTCRAWLER AND RACHEL GREY

Long-time teammates and friends, Nightcrawler and Rachel Grey have been members of the X-Men together, as well as two of the founding members of Excalibur. After the disbanding of the X-Men's British counterpart, the two returned to the X-Men with Kitty Pryde. Nightcrawler was going through an off-again phase with his longtime love, Amanda Sefton, upon his return and Rachel was experiencing a bit of an identity crisis similar to her mother's.

The two ended up joining Kitty's new team of X-Men and eventually started developing feelings for each other. Rachel was unsure what to make of it at first, but they soon found themselves in an intimate relationship. Despite Rachel's recent issues at the hands of Cassandra Nova, this couple is still going strong.

2 SCOTT AND JEAN

The OG X-Men power couple, Scott Summers and Jean Grey, are one of the most classic romances in comic book history. You know the story: boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl stops breathing and is resurrected as a power-hungry celestial force, then boy finds out the force wasn't his girl at all and is reunited with girl, only to get married and then have her actually pass on.

Though Jean was recently resurrected after being gone for over a decade, it was Cyclops' turn to take a dirt nap when she came back. We're still holding out hope that Cyclops will be resurrected so these two crazy kids can work things out and get back to being the best X-couple ever.

1 KITTY PRYDE AND COLOSSUS

While their romance was initially a little taboo given that obvious difference, Kitty and Colossus became one of the most celebrated and genuine couples to grace the pages of X-Men. The saga of the will-they-won't-they drove readers crazy for years, until Colossus finally popped the question and Kitty said yes.

It just went downhill from there. After a heart to heart talk with Colossus's younger sister, Magik, Kitty's doubts in regards to their relationship took hold of her as she literally phased through the ground at the altar. She at least returned at the reception to explain herself and apologize to Colossus, though it's still unclear on where this super-couple will go from here, we certainly wish they would've said "I do."
