Bronson director Nicolas Winding Refn has made no secret of his desire to helm a Wonder Woman movie, declaring last year that, ” I was born to make it.” There was some question at the time whether he was being serious, but over the weekend at Empire Big Screen in London, Refn made it clear that he is.
Following a screening Drive, The Playlist reports the director shared with journalists that he’s been told by studio executives hit shot at Wonder Woman may hinge on the success of his remake of Logan’s Run, Refn’s first major Hollywood release.
“I would love to make Wonder Woman,” he said. “And I also think that Christina Hendricks would be the perfect Wonder Woman, but Warner Bros. haven’t called yet. But I’m getting closer with Logan’s Run. I think someone said to me in a meeting that if I get Logan’s Run right, then I’ll get Wonder Woman.”
The Emmy-nominated Hendricks, who appears with Logan’s Run star Ryan Gosling in Drive, has been an Internet favorite to play DC Comics’ Amazon Princess, a movement that began when David E. Kelley’s failed television revival was still in its infancy. The Mad Men actress embraced the notion, saying in December that, “I’ve been wanting to wear that outfit my whole life.”
NBC’s rejection of the Wonder Woman pilot raised concerns about the immediate future of the franchise. But Logan’s Run doesn’t open until 2014, placing plenty of distance between Kelley’s TV project and a potential feature film — which, if the stars aligned for Refn, probably wouldn’t arrive in theaters before 2016.
