Marvel has introduced a new comic book supervillain in an unexpected place: the mobile game Contest of Champions.
Published by Kabam, Contest of Champions is a popular fighting game, as well as the subject of an in-universe comic adaptation by Al Ewing and artist Thomas Labourot.
The new character is Morningstar, an evil queen with a connection to the hero Guillotine, also introduced in the Contest of Champions game and then brought into the comics. Here's her description:
Morningstar is an all-new original Marvel character debuting in Marvel Contest of Champions. She started out as a bloodthirsty and tyrannical queen at the turn of the 10th century who was overthrown and imprisoned in a specially-built "iron maiden" torture device made to trap the soul of the tortured beyond death. After many years, she has been given the chance for revenge by Mephisto, Lord of Lies, and her iron maiden prison has been transformed into golem-like armor as she wanders the land in search of her infamous demon sword - La Fleur du Mal - currently in the possession of Guillotine, another Marvel character that debuted in Marvel Contest of Champions.
Narrated by Guillotin, aka Jeannine Sauvage, the trailer contains hints for the secret history of this corner of the Marvel Universe. Guillotine and Morningstar both wielded La Fleur du Mal, but the trailer implies they were not the only ones, potentially connecting the cursed sword to numerous new heroes and villains. Marvel fans might also be excited about the presence of Mephisto, who is given a voice here, and it might be a surprise.
Kabam is at New York Comic Con this weekend at Booth #1466, where attendees will have a chance to try out Morningstar for themselves, as well as a classic Marvel character: the vampire hunter Blade.
