‘Conjuring’ Writers to Pen ‘Journey’ Sequels For Johnson & Hutcherson

Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson are expected to return for not one, but two Journey sequels based on the works of Jules Verne.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, brothers Carey and Chad Hayes, who wrote The Conjuring, have signed on to pen both installments. They’re also working on the script for Johnson’s Seal Team 666.

The New Line/Walden Media franchise debuted in 2008 with Journey to the Center of the Earth, starring Brendan Frasier, followed in 2012 with Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which featured Johnson and Hutcherson. The idea of both stars returning for a third film began circulating shortly after the second premiered.

Mark and Brian Gunn penned a draft of Journey 3, but it’s unclear how much of their version will be used. Other big questions include whether the sequels will film back to back, and who will direct. Journey 2‘s Brad Peyton seemed enthusiastic about the franchise when he spoke about potential sequels in 2012.

“I grew up a fan of Verne, so I know a lot about the mythologies,” Peyton said. “Mysterious Island was one of eight or nine really seminal works. I know we’ve just scratched the surface of what we can do. This one’s going to be a lot bigger. We’re going to go to a completely different world. It’s just going to be a bigger experience, and we’re going to grow the mythology. Journey 2 was about rebooting a franchise; now it’s about making the seminal work in the franchise.”

Journey 3 does not yet have a release date.
