A theory that upcoming horror film The Curse of La Llorona will be part of the Conjuring Universe has been confirmed, as a character from 2014's Annabelle makes an appearance in that film.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Tony Amendola's Father Perez makes a guest appearance in The Curse of La Llorona. He shows up in Mexico to help a family being stalked by the folkloric Weeping Woman at the center of events. He makes the connection to Annabelle explicit, recounting his involvement in the events of that movie while images from it appear on the screen.

Amendola, known for his supporting roles in Dexter and Syfy's time-travel opera Continuum, and his involvement were teased in the first trailer. Father Perez went through the ringer in the first Annabelle but managed to survive. Curse of La Llorona, set sometime in the 1970s, is meant to take place after that film.

The news isn't too surprising as, despite early marketing indicating that this new supernatural adventure was a standalone, producer James Wan has a habit of connecting his horror films. The Conjuring universe now encompasses two Conjuring movies, two Annabelle films and The Nun. There are already plans for new Conjuring and Annabelle movies.

The film hits theaters on April 19.
