The upcoming third installment of The Conjuring is taking the franchise in a new direction, according to screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick."[The Conjuring 3] is a completely different movie than the first two," Johnson-McGoldrick wrote in response to a question on Twitter. "The franchise is expanding beyond the 'haunted house' formula." Titled The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the third Conjuring film will show the return of Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, respectively. Sterling Jerins will also reprise her role as the Warrens' daughter Judy. The Conjuring 3 will be based on the 1981 murder trail of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, in which demonic possession was used the defense for a murder.

Aquaman director James Wan helmed the first two Conjuring films but will only serve as a producer and co-story writer on the third. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will instead be directed by Michael Chaves, who also directed the Conjuring Universe-set film, The Curse of La Llorona. The film will introduce several new actors to the franchise, including Ruairi O'Connor, Charlene Amoia and Ronnie Gene Blevins.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It will be released through Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. It will arrive in theaters on Sept. 11.
