CONFIRMED: "Marvel's Agents of SHIELD" Alien is a Kree

Confirming what had been widely speculated for months, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Executive Producer Jeffrey Bell has told TV Guide that the mysterious floating blue alien corpse that's played a major role in the series is indeed a member of the Kree race, as will be revealed on the show's Dec. 2 episode, "...Ye Who Enter Here." And while that's a significant revelation to the comic book-reading audience, Bell said it'll only create more questions for the show's main players.

"Our people don't know anything about the Kree or that there's a planet full of them," Bell told TV Guide. "What they do know is that the strange carvings created by Coulson after he was injected with the Kree serum are actually the map of a city, and they need to find that city before Hydra does. But where is it? Here or on another planet?"

This isn't the first time the Kree have been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- the alien race played a major role in this past summer's "Guardians of the Galaxy," with that film's primary antagonist Ronan the Accuser, a member of the alien race. The Kree also play a major role in the origins of two Marvel properties with feature films on the horizon -- "Captain Marvel" (though human, Carol Danvers' received superpowers after her genetics intermingled with Kree hero Mar-Vell) and "Inhumans" (who are a result of ancient experiments the Kree performed on humans).

Multiple observers including CBR's Meagan Damore have posited theories on how "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." may be setting up the introduction of Inhumans to Marvel Studios' live-action world, and this latest news -- along with multiple developments in recent episodes -- certainly seems to further bolster those notions.

Sharing an obvious visual trait with the Kree of the comic books -- humanoid other than blue skin -- many have suspected the floating alien corpse (used to resurrect Phil Coulson from the dead) was Kree since first seen last season on "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." episode "T.A.H.I.T.I." Among those include series co-star Chloe Bennet, who said in a red carpet interview in March that the alien was a Kree, and then later tweeted that she was making an educated guess.

The Kree are a product of comic book legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's fruitful and vastly influential stint on "Fantastic Four," first appearing in 1967's "Fantastic Four" #65. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
