In Drawing Crazy Patterns, I spotlight at least five scenes/moments from within comic book stories that fit under a specific theme (basically, stuff that happens frequently in comics). Note that these lists are inherently not exhaustive. They are a list of five examples (occasionally I'll be nice and toss in a sixth). So no instance is "missing" if it is not listed. It's just not one of the five examples that I chose.

Marvel recently announced that they will be launching a new Savage Avengers series that will feature Conan the Barbarian as a member of the team! The current theme for next week's The Line it is Drawn is having our artists add Conan to the cover of iconic comic book covers (go tweet us ideas for Conan crashing comic covers to the CSBG Twitter account). I figured I'd spotlight a few notable instances when Conan previously crossed over with the Marvel Comics Universe, although do note that almost all of these were not the literal "main" Marvel Universe!

In What If...? #13 (by Roy Thomas, John Buscema and Ernie Chan), Conan is transported by a magician into modern day New York City...

Naturally, the sight of a barbarian with a giant sword running around the streets of New York City brings the cops on to Conan's tracks. Peter Parker and Mary Jane are out on a date and Peter oddly decides NOT to turn into Spider-Man. I guess he probably often has to decide whether or not the cops can handle any given emergency, right?

Conan then runs into a cab and attacks it, but the driver of the cab agrees to help Conan hide...

He goes home with her and finds out her name is Dannette, almost assuredly named after Roy Thomas' significant other at the time (and now his wife)...

Conan ends up returning home at the end of the story. It's a really good issue.

Twenty-six issues later, in What If...? #39 (by Alan Zelenetz, Ron Wilson and Danny Bulanadi), Thor suddenly finds himself in Conan's land and he witnesses Conan killing some people (as Conan is wont to do) and the two fight over it...

Now that they've proven themselves to each other, they team up with each other to foil a plot involving Set. In the end, Thor is killed and he asks Conan to take Mjolnir back to Asgard and Conan sets off to climb his way to Asgard. It's a striking ending to the story.

The first outright interaction of Conan into the main Marvel Universe occurred during, of all things, Atlantis Attacks. You see, during the crossover, they would have these back-up stories by Peter Sanderson, Mark Bagley (in some of his earliest Marvel work) and Keith Williams showing the history of the Serpent Crown, a key part of the crossover. Set had actually first been a Conan idea, so he obviously tied into one part of the crossover (all of this was firmly within the main Marvel Universe) in Punisher Annual #2...

In the second volume of What If...?, Glenn Herdling, Gary Kwapisz, Ian Akin and Brian Garvey told a clever tale in #16 that shows Wolverine actually thrown into the past during the fight on the moon in X-Men #137 (he was in the Watcher's home on the moon in that original issue). He meets Red Sonja and falls in love with her because she reminds him of Jean Grey. When Conan seemingly hurts Sonja, Wolverine goes nuts...

In the end, Conan goes back to Wolverine's time while Wolverine remains in the past and ultimately marries Red Sonja...

Finally, in the only outright "Conan interacts with modern characters from the main Marvel Universe" story (Conan briefly cameos in Thor Corps #3, but interacts with just a nameless astronaut), Conan is brought into the future by Zarrko the Tomorrow Man and the barbarian tangles with Ant-Man in Fantastic Four #405 (by Tom DeFalco, Paul Ryan and Danny Bulanadi)...

I look forward to Conan being brought to the future in an upcoming issue of Avengers: No Road Home!
