Community creator Dan Harmon has confirmed that a movie based on the sitcom will happen.

"I’ll confirm what Alison [Brie] said which is that legitimacy is here, conversations and agreements are happening," Harmon said in an interview with TheWrap. "There's a story -- who knows if we’ll end up sticking to it, but it was something we had to compile in order to take it out and court various venues. And now negotiations happen."

While Harmon did elaborate that the future remains uncertain, he also confirmed that the prospect of a Community movie in the future is not an "if," but a "when." "When you put the percentage chances together it’s like you have to account for maybe the world blowing up or another virus happening," he said. "But as far as the industry is concerned, this is a matter of when and not if, for sure." Harmon also confirmed that just because conversations around a movie are moving forward, it could still take some time to become a reality.

"I could have said what I just said three years ago and it would have been almost as accurate, and can you imagine if I had said that three years ago?" he said. "That’s me setting people up for three years of abusive neglect and making them feel forgotten, and it’s hard enough to just say nothing."

Harmon's confirmation comes after a previous interview with Brie, who portrayed Annie Edison for all six seasons of Community, wherein the actor revealed that there had been "movement" on a movie. "I’m saying there are legitimate conversations that are happening," she said. "Whether or not they will ever turn into an actual movie -- I would love it if they did, and I hope that they do, but the fact alone that actual real conversations are happening is I think the most progress we’ve ever made on that front."

Created by Harmon, Community aired for five seasons on NBC, with its sixth and final season appearing on Yahoo! Screen in 2015. The series followed a study group at a fictional community college in Greendale, Colorado, which consisted of Joel McHale's Jeff Winger, Chevy Chase as Pierce Hawthorne, Gillian Jacobs as Britta Perry, Danny Pudi as Abed Nadir, Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley Bennett, Brie as Annie Edison and Donald Glover as Troy Barnes. Ken Jeong portrayed Ben Chang, who appeared in a variety of roles from Spanish professor to fellow student. The series also featured Jim Rash as Greendale's dean, Craig Pelton.

Harmon served as showrunner for the first three seasons of Community before he was fired and then rehired for Season 5. While Community was canceled after six seasons, the hope from fans for a movie began as a joke in the Season 2 episode "Paradigms of Human Memory," where Abed noted that NBC's superhero series The Cape would last for "six seasons and a movie." After Community managed to get six seasons, fans have anticipated a film ever since.

"I used to just lie about it," McHale said in September 2021 regarding the possibility of a movie. "People would be like, 'Is the movie going to happen?' And I'd be like, 'Yeah, sure.'" However, at the same time, McHale went on to say that things were beginning to move forward and Community may finally get its six seasons and a movie.
