Comic writer Brenden Fletcher described his struggle to beat COVID-19 to fans.

"Hi Twitter friends! I'm sorry I’ve been gone so long," Fletcher posted to his followers on Twitter. "For almost a full year now, I’ve been struggling to overcome the aftereffects of a COVID infection that's gotten the better of me." The Gotham Academy writer added, "I had to step away from my work, including social media, in order to focus on healing."

He further explained that he is "very thankful to have made it [through] the worst of the virus largely unscathed & eternally grateful to everyone who stuck by me," and apologized to the people he hasn't been in contact with while he's been sick.

"I'm generally a very private person but I thought it might be helpful to those of you infected with the virus (or who know someone who has been) to read about my unique set of symptoms and the factors that have allowed me to return to my desk for the first time since July 2020," he continued. "This'll be a thread but TL;DR: I got infected in Mar '20, was improving somewhat through June, started getting hit w/ kidney stones in July (15 stones & counting) which caused Covid symptoms to resurface & intensify, vaccine in Mar '21 finally begun to fully alleviate symptoms."

Fletcher explained his full experience, revealing several side effects he's been dealing with since his diagnosis. In one of his final posts, Fletcher shared that he recently got the Pfizer vaccine and is feeling the best he has in over a year. The writer is scheduled to receive his second dose of the vaccine soon and will update followers on Twitter on his progress.

"So that's that. It's been the worst year ever but I feel like I’ve turned a significant corner at long last," Fletcher concluded. "Feeling really optimistic about everything and happy to be back reconnecting with friends and colleagues! Can't wait to catch up with everyone!!"

Fletcher is best known for writing 2016's Batgirl comic series for DC and the young adult mystery series Gotham Academy. His current projects include Motor Crush and Isola for Image Comics, as well as Ghost in the Shell: Global Neural Network for Kodansha.
