Comixology

Sean Murphy’s blistering vision of the Dark Knight legend continues with a new point of focus in the fantastic Batman: Curse of the White Knight #4. After a horrific tragedy, the Bat Family is reeling, but focused on stopping the madman known as Azrael from inflicting further damage.

In a gorgeous, cinematic issue focused on Barbara Gordon, Sean Murphy continues to shine as a master storyteller in the graphic medium. This series continues to get more engaging and tragic as it goes along and is without a doubt the best offering from DC Comics Black Label imprint.

4 Batman/Superman #3

By: Joshua Williamson, David Marquez, Alejandro Sanchez, and  John H. Hill

Comixology

Batman/Superman #3 is a prime example of top notch superhero storytelling. Writer Joshua Williamson (Nailbiter) and artist David Marquez (All-New X-Men) tap into the friendship at the core of this series and makes every nightmarish scenario the titular duo experience have more weight that it would if they were not more than just teammates.

There is a relentlessness to Batman/Superman that is as engaging as it is stress-inducing. With Superman under the Batman Who Laughs’ dark tutelage, the ground beneath Batman’s feet gets smaller, but don’t count the Caped Crusader out just yet.

3 Sharkey the Bounty Hunter #6

By: Mark Millar and Simone Bianchi

Comixology

Some comic books feel as if they were ripped from the pages of Heavy Metal Magazine and repackaged as something only ostensibly more subtle than the type of stories the publication is known for. Mark Millar and Simone Bianchi science fiction-western miniseries Sharkey the Bounty Hunter is one of those comic books and it has come to end with its sixth issue.

Sharkey, who is basically Lemmy from Motorhead with crazy space guns, faces off against an enclave of rival bounty hunters to reclaim his ship. With gorgeous art, insane action and plenty of heart, Sharkey the Bounty Hunter #6 brings a unique story to its close.

2 The Amazing Mary Jane #1

By: Leah Williams, Carlos Gomez, Carlos Lopez, VC's Joe Caramagna, Humberto Ramos, and Edgar Delgado

Comixology

While working on a big budget film about one of Spider-Man’s most notorious villains, Mary Jane Watson discovers things are not as they seem. The Amazing Mary Jane #1 is a smart, topical, and often hilarious debut starring everyone’s favorite redhead, in her very first solo series.

Leah Williams’ script shines and balances lighthearted quips with serious social commentary masterfully. Carlos Gomez’s artwork is gorgeous and while he doesn’t get an opportunity to illustrate larger-than-life battles, there is an urgency to his visual pacing and still manages to pull off show-stopping panels. This book is a lot of fun and manages to be so without feeling too twee.

1 Marauders #1

By: Gerry Duggan, Matteo Lolli, Federico Blee, VC's Cory Petit, Tom Muller, Mathew Wilson, and Russell Dauterman

Comixology

Krakoa is a shining beacon of hope for all mutants who want a place to call their own. But not everyone has heard the message (or they weren’t allowed to hear it). Kitty Pryde, who is having trouble getting through a Krokoa door, is setting sale on the high seas to find the oppressed and give them a voyage to a new home.

Marauders #1 is surprisingly heartfelt, funny and filled with well executed action set pieces. As the “Dawn of X” continues, all the intricate parts needed to make Xavier’s dream come to fruition are being explored and Marauders #1 looks at those who were left behind.
