What a huge week for comics. The first Wednesday in July is filled with new beginnings and one rather surprising end. From DC, Gerard Way and Co. return to the world of misfits heroes, the intrepid Lois Lane gets her own series (and sees the return of Greg Rucka to DC Comics), and a stunning Superman story is made available in comic stores for the first time.
From Image Comics, the start to a brand new all-ages space adventure by Jason Aaron, Dennis Hallum, and Stephen Green kicks off, and one of the publisher’s longest-running and most popular books comes to a sudden and surprising end. Also from Marvel, the return of a classic Star Wars: Legends character takes aim at none other than Darth Vader.
6 Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #1

Robotman, Space Case, and the rest of DC Comics’ greatest band of misfit heroes are back in Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #1. But don’t like the title fool you; this is a continuation of the story writer Gerard Way and artist Nick Derington started back in 2016.
Way returns with co-writer Jeremy Lambert and James Harvey handling art duties this time around. The story follows Cliff Steele, who is getting acclimated to becoming human (and a fictional construct?) while the rest of the team tackle a bizarre distress call from beyond our world. It’s all the weirdness fans of this series have come to love and then some.
5 Lois Lane #1

If you’ve enjoyed the rouge intrepid reporter who has graced the pages of Action Comics the last few months and you’ve been dying to see her in her own series, you are in luck. Writer Greg Rucka (Gotham Central) and artist Mike Perkins (Captain America) have just kicked off a 12-issue maxi-series simply called Lois Lane.
The first issue of this new series dives into how far Lois is willing to get to chase a story. With some great appearances by other shadowy characters (and her main squeeze, of course), Lois Lane #1 is the start of something special, especially for fans of the noir genre.
4 Superman: Up in the Air #1

The 100-Page Walmart exclusive DC Comics titles have been strange beasts. Each issue includes several reprints of older stories as well as a new, never-before published comic, some of which are serialized. Now, one of those ongoing stories is coming to its own issue in the pages of Superman: Up in the Sky #1.
Written by comic scribe virtuoso Tom King and featuring art by the legendary Andy Kubert, this first issue collects content originally published in Superman Giant #3 and #4. This first issue plays to both King and Kubert’s strengths are comic creators and is a can’t miss for any Superman fan who couldn’t get their hands on those Walmart exclusives.
3 Sea of Stars #1

Writing duo Jason Aaron and Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum have teamed up with artists Stephen Green for an all new all-ages science fiction adventure, Sea of Stars. A father’s work is never done. After being contracted to travel across the vastness of space, a local freight driver is forced to bring along his nine year old son.
Early into their travel, trouble arises and they are separated by myriad perils including a giant, space shark (yes, you read that right). Sea of Stars #1 is a fun romp that young and old comic fans can enjoy.
2 The Walking Dead #193

Rick Grimes is dead. This is a sentence many long-time fans of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard's ongoing survival horror comic series never thought they’d ever read. But we now live in a post-Rick Grimes world and there isn’t much anyone can do about it. But what’s even more shocking is this week’s issue, because this is where it all ends… or at least, that’s what we’re lead to believe.
The Walking Dead has been nothing short of a pop culture touchstone, and if this is truly the end of the line, it’s been one wild ride. This series has always been more than just the Rick Grimes Show. It’s been filled with soapy drama, harrowing horror, and truly emotional moments that draw fans in.
1 Star Wars: Target Vader #1

After making an appearance in miniseries, Han Solo – Imperial Cadet the cybernetic bounty hunter, Beilert Valance returns in Star Wars: Target Vader #1. Valance first appeared in Star Wars #16 in 1978, which falls under the extremely wide umbrella of non-canonical stories known as Star Wars: Legends.
This issue kicks off a new six-part miniseries by writer Robbie Thompson and artists Marc Laming and Cris Bolson. The version of Valance has much more in common with the character we know for Legends and he’s on the hunt for the most dangerous quarry imaginable: Darth Vader.
