Is it Bendis and Batman Day? With some strong offerings from both comics’ most prolific writer and the world’s greatest detective being released in one day, it certainly feels like it. From DC Comics, writer Tom King sticks the landing on the final of his current Batman story line, the biggest conspiracy currently happening in comics continues, Superman’s dad gets to speak his piece, and the classic Caped Crusader gets an update.

Marvel Comics comes swinging with a one-two punch of fan-favorite characters getting some shine. The first comes from legendary writer/artist team Peter Milligan and Mike Allred in a super-sized issue featuring the most bizarre team of mutants ever fit to print. And the busiest member of the Fantastic Four gets her own new miniseries.

6 Batman #74

By: Tom King, Mikel Janin, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles

Comixology

As Tom King marches toward the end of his iconic and divisive run on the series (issue #85 will currently be his last credit to the series), Batman #74 marks the finale of the story arc “The Fall and the Fallen.” And in typical fashion for the series, its ambiguous reading is its biggest selling point (that and the raw talent behind it).

With gorgeous art by Mikel Janin, this issue follows Bruce and Thomas Wayne as they traverse the desert, battling assassins, the elements, and eventually each other (just as the cover promised!). This series continues to be challenging and while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it continues to push the boundaries of what a Batman comic can be.

5 Batman: Universe #1

By: Brian Michael Bendis, Nick Derington, Dave Stewart, and Josh Reed

Comixology

Originally published in the 100-page Walmart exclusive series GIANT BATMAN, Batman: Universe #1 pairs one of the most unique artists in the industry (Nick Derington of Doom Patrol fame) and the most prolific comic writer alive (Brian Michael Bendis), and the results are stellar.

Hearkening back to a forgone era of Batman comics, but still maintaining a fresh and progressive vibe in terms of plotting, humor, and action, Batman: Universe #1 is the kind of Batman comic we never knew we still needed. Most of the issue if fun and games, until one of the deadliest villains in Batman’s expansive Rogues Gallery joins the party.

4 Event Leviathan #2

By: Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, and Josh Reed

Comixology

The world’s greatest detectives (at least in the DC Universe) are on the case, but with such a perplexing enigma that possess immeasurable danger behind the riddle, will their collective abilities be enough to stop what comes next? If the fallout of Event Leviathan #2 is any indication, it’s still too close to call.

With a whip smart script from Brian Michael Bendis and arresting art by the always amazing Alex Maleev, Event Leviathan #2 takes us further down the rabbit hole of DC Comics’ biggest mystery. But not all who journey along with us will be the same or make it back at all.

3 Superman #13

By: Brian Michael Bendis, Brandon Peterson, Ivan Reis, Joe Prado, Alex Sinclair, and Dave Sharpe

Comixology

Jor-El, you go some ‘splaining to do. Superman #13 focuses on Clark’s biological father regaling his son with the story of how their home world was destroyed and the massive conspiracy to cover up the real reason why it happened in the first place.

We’ve seen the destruction of Krypton as frequently as we’ve seen Thomas and Martha Wayne getting gun down in Crime Alley. We’ve become almost numb to it. But recent comic stories have proven otherwise. The Kevin Smith and Jim Lee story from Detective Comics #1000 showed familiar stories still have new avenues to explore and now, Superman #13 takes us at ground level with the man who claims to have tried to save his world and failed.

2 Giant-Size X-Statix #1

By: Peter Milligan, Michael Allred, Laura Allred, and Nate Piekos

Comixology

Arguably the most bizarre roster of X-Force is back in Peter Milligan and Mike Allred’s Giant-Size X-Statix #1. The reality TV superhero team is going to reform whether some members like it or not. With the new inclusion of the daughter of the deceased U-Go-Girl, the reformed band of misfits face their most shocking villain yet.

Everything we love about the original series is alive and well (so to speak) in Giant-Size X-Statix #1. All the heart, dark humor, drama, violence, and just general weirdness is on full display on every page of this husky issue and it’s wonderful.

1 The Invisible Woman #1

By: Mark Waid, Mattia De Iulis, VC's Joe Caramagna, and Adam Hughes

Comixology

Arguably the greatest monarch in Marvel Comics history gets the celebration she deserves in the all new miniseries from writer Mark Waid and artist Mattia De Iulis with The Invisible Woman #1. Sue Storm is more than a devoted wife, loving mother, and brilliant engineer: she’s a superhero with a storied career who juggles more responsibilities than more of her fellow heroes (even those on her own team).

Mark Waid puts all his admiration for Sue Storm on every page of this celebration of one the more beloved superheroes birthed from the Silver Age. And De Iulis’ artwork makes it all pop with gorgeous illustrations and solid pacing. Even if you’re not current on the Fantastic Four affairs, this is a great book to jump into.
