COMIC REEL: Kring Reveals “Heroes Reborn” Details; New “Doctor Who” Trailer

Entertainment Weekly spoke with “Heroes” creator Tim Kring about the upcoming “Heroes Reborn” miniseries, and the executive producer revealed the most details yet about how the series found a revival and whether some old familiar faces beyond Jack Coleman (AKA Noah Bennett AKA Horn-Rimmed Glasses) will show up.

“It wasn’t a pitch from me, it was a pitch from NBC to me,” Kring told EW. “They saw the value in that franchise and brand and asked if I was interested in helming it again. And we had left the story in a place where we had more story to tell. So given the opportunity, I had ideas of where I wanted the story to go originally when we were hoping for a fifth season and so when we were given the opportunity five years later, some of those same thoughts were there as to where this story goes. But five years had passed and I also had new ideas on how to reboot the brand in a way that gives people a whole fresh take on the series with a whole host of new characters but gives you that sense of you’re in that world of Heroes you’re familiar with.”

“The vast, vast majority are brand new characters, brand new ideas. [Bringing back previous characters is] really only to give a sense of continuity and a tether to the original world,” he continued later in the interview. “If it was all completely brand new, we’d miss certain elements that need to be there to give you that bridge to cross to something new. I approached Coleman because he was a character who had a spine through the series that allowed you to meet new characters. So he’s a character I wanted to make sure had a little part at the beginning of this thing.”

However, some of the former “Heroes” cast have moved on. Ali Larter told TV Guide that she won’t be coming back due to her commitment to “Legends.” (“Not that I didn’t love ‘Heroes’ and loved working on it, but I’m just at a different stage of my life,” Larter said. “I’m super excited and proud to be a part of [‘Legends’] and working with Sean Bean and an incredible cast.”) Zachary Quinto, who played Sylar on the original run, told IGN that he had actually been in touch with Kring, and while the door is open for him to be involved, there’s an issue of availability.

“I don’t know that it would really even be possible,” Quinto told IGN. “And it’s a challenge for me because that experience and role and opportunity really changed my life completely and sent me on a path that I might not have otherwise have been on, but at the same time I’m very interested in forward momentum, I’m very interested in expanding and defying people’s expectations of me. I don’t know that going back to such a definitely iconic character would necessarily do that. So it’s a larger question that I haven’t had to answer because no one’s actually given me an offer. We’ll see. I’m glad they’re doing it and I know that whether or not I’m involved that the fans will enjoy it.”

Airs on NBC in 2015

The BBC has released the first full trailer for the upcoming eighth season of “Doctor Who.” Check it out below.

Debuts August 23 on the BBC

“Constantine” has found its new female lead. Angelica Celaya has been cast as Zed, replacing Lucy Griffiths as the co-star of NBC’s upcoming drama. Executive Producer Daniel Cerone described Zed as “intuitive” and someone who “can detect bullshit.” Cerone also said that viewers can expect to see a fun Easter Egg in the fifth episode.

“Right there, OK, that’s an opportunity to introduce a DC character. So we talked to our DC representatives and we’re like what if we make this character Jim Corrigan, who goes on to become The Spectre,” he said. “So it’s a perfect opportunity for us, because we can name this character Jim Corrigan and within our story, for the general viewer, that works, because now Constantine has a friend on the force. For the comic book fan, ‘My God, that’s Jim Corrigan!’ And we can get back to that character and can slowly develop that character and who knows, maybe there’s an opportunity in the future to even see the origin story unfold within the framework of our TV series.”

However, neither Constantine’s smoking or bisexuality will not show up in the television series.

Premieres October 24 on NBC

There’s not much new from “The Walking Dead,” but Entertainment Weekly has a new photo of Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon. No real context was given for the photo, but things don’t really look good for Daryl. Keep the riots from forming until the season begins later this fall on AMC.

Returns this Fall on AMC

James Gunn has been posting different photos from behind-the-scenes on “Guardians of the Galaxy” via his Instagram — and one of them has a fully made-up Dave Bautista as Drax alongside Chris Pratt as a battle-damaged Peter Quill. The Drax makeup is pretty impressive, and Gunn’s photo gives an idea of exactly how detailed it actually is.

Opens August 1

Fans might want “Hellboy 3” to happen, but there aren’t any plans on the horizon according to Guillermo Del Toro. During a Reddit AMA, Del Toro said the movie is not on the horizon, but gave a brief plot synopsis of what might have been.

“Well, you know, we don’t have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film,” Del Toro said. “He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It’s a very interesting ending to the series, but I don’t think it will happen.”

According to an interview with IGN, Roberto Orci had an amicable split from longtime writing partner Alex Kurtzman earlier this year, and may no longer be involved in writing “Amazing Spider-Man 3.”

“I don’t know what their plans are for that franchise,” Orci told IGN. “I don’t ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I’ve read probably as much as anyone else. There’s a love for the Sinister Six, the idea of Venom — there’s an idea of Spider-Man’s going to be one of these characters that’s part of our business. He’s such a popular character. Spider-Man’s not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined.”

Opens June 10, 2016
