Comic-Con's Masquerade does not solely take the quality of the costume into account. The winner must possess a persona, create a mood and portray a story. Comic-Con stated, "The Masquerade reminds us that the creative arts reside in ALL of us, and that among our attendees there's plenty of amazing talents and creativity worth showcasing. More than a few times over the years we have seen our cosplaying contestants go on to professional costuming careers."

Winners of the Masquerade will receive custom-made medallions. Categories include: Best in Show, Judges’ Choice, Best Re-Creation, Best Original Design, Best Workmanship, Best Presentation, Best Group, and Most HumorousThe Masquerade award medallions were designed by fantasy artist and illustrator Sue Dawe.

The Masquerade Tumblr website will go live to the public on July 23.
