There are a lot of theories regarding superheroes in comic books that have inspired hotly driven spirited debates among their fans. Some regarding sidekicks, others in light of secret identities and who should know them, but none have inspired such strongly believed arguments quite like a debate regarding the wedding in a comic book. Whether readers love them or hate them, anyone who reads comic books has an opinion on the trope of the comic book wedding. Some wonder if weddings deserve a place within the confides of a comic book panel. Others debate whether or not superheroes should get married to begin with. Some readers have argued that weddings get in the way of the action found in comic books. On the contrary, sometimes, the most chaotic moments in the history of comic books have happened during weddings.
While we have seen some emotionally driven weddings that brought a tear to our eyes, we have also seen a good fair share of weddings end in complete disaster. In comic book lore, disaster does not just equal a runaway bride, or second thoughts from the groom. Disaster could mean the wedding is bombarded by a plethora of intruding villains there to destroy the bride, the groom, and whatever heroes may also be in attendance. History tells us that not every wedding in a comic book winds up being a total success, and not every wedding turns out to be a total failure, but here is a list compiling some of our favorite weddings together; the good ones that ended in bliss and the bad ones that ended in turmoil.
30 SUCCESS: APOLLO AND MIDNIGHTER
Apollo and Midnighter marked one of the earliest times readers saw a gay couple in a major mainstream comic book, and in The Authority #29, they had the first ever mainstream comic book wedding between two men.
The wedding itself as a whole was only a small portion of the issue, but it was a nice way to give the issue a happy ending, as well as the characters their own happy ending... for the time being at least.
29 DISASTER: LINDA PARK AND WALLY WEST
During The Flash Vol. 2 #142, readers were anxious to see love birds Wally West and Linda Park finally tie the knot. During the issue's conclusion, right before he slips the ring onto her finger, Wally wakes up in his bed with no memories of Linda or their wedding.
Meanwhile, Linda disappeared from time itself after getting captured by Abra Kadabra. After she escaped, Wally found her in an alternate universe and the two married at a later date, only for that event to be erased by "Flashpoint".
28 SUCCESS: J. JONAH JAMESON SR. AND AUNT MAY
Riding off the backlash of "One More Day" (a storyline which erased the marriage of Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker from canon), Marvel decided to make it all up to their fans by giving them a wedding anyone would be proud for the 600th issue of Amazing Spider-Man. Not between Peter and his longtime girlfriend, but between his Aunt May and J. Jonah Jameson Sr.
The ceremony gave us some tearjerking moments, like Peter calling his aunt "mom" and watching a new familial dynamic development between Peter and his old boss, J. Jonah Jameson Jr.
27 DISASTER: VISION AND SCARLET WITCH
The wedding between Vision and Scarlet Witch might have the special privilege of having the most chaotic wedding in comic book history. The ceremony kicked off rather unceremoniously with Vision having to save his bride to be from Dormammu.
Afterwards, they have to get themselves pulled out of limbo by Importus. Then, they had to go forward with a double marriage among themselves, and Cotati and Mantis. Yeah, this is gonna be a lot to take in when they tell their kids about this day.
26 SUCCESS: BIGBY WOLF AND SNOW WHITE
After divorcing Prince Charming centuries ago, Snow White crossed paths with the wild and gritty Bigby Wolf when the two became co-workers in Fabletown, respectively as deputy mayor and the sheriff of the town. In due time, they became unlikely lovers and after a magical night together, had seven children.
After being separated for a few years, the two came together to finally admit their true love for each other, and got married. Aside from a few bumps in the road after the ceremony, they lived happily ever after.
25 DISASTER: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne's relationship has been through some highs and lows, and when they were low, oh boy, they were low. After suffering a severe case of schizophrenia, one of his personalities sprouted into The Yellowjacket, and took Janet away.
When she discovered Hank was Yellowjacket, she decided to play along and marry him. Right after the ceremony, they were attacked by The Ringmaster and his Circus of Crime. The event was catastrophic enough to snap Hank back into his normal persona.
24 SUCCESS: DONNA TROY AND TERRY LONG
When Donna Troy was set to marry her much older professor, Terry Long, readers expected the worse to come out of it. Then, Tales of the Teen Titans #50 came around, and the wedding was surprisingly pleasant.
No fighting, no supervillain invasion, no unfortunate twists or turns, and only a teensy bit of melodrama among the patrons. All things considered, it was a gorgeous event that provided readers a relief from the usual chaos the Teen Titans had to face.
23 DISASTER: BATMAN AND VICKI VALE
In Batman issue #79, titled "Bride of Batman!," Vicki Vale tried to get out of marrying a Shah by claiming that she was already engaged to Batman. Which was not true, but The Dark Knight went along with the ruse.
Right before walking down the aisle, Bruce Wayne started a rumor that Batman would only marry Vale if she got plastic surgery. The Shah objected during the ceremony, calling off the wedding, but refused to marry Batman's freshly "brokenhearted" ex.
22 SUCCESS: CYCLOPS AND JEAN GREY
Cyclops and Jean Grey have always had a rocky relationship in the history of Marvel Comics, but for one day at least, one issue, one wedding between the couple, they had an absolutely perfect day.
Apart from Sabretooth being locked up atop a hill outside the X-Mansion, no supervillains were in attendance nor did they disrupt the ceremony. Wolverine didn't even arrive to object to his love marrying Cyclops -- just a festive ceremony between the X-Men's most polarizing couple.
21 DISASTER: TALIA AL GHUL AND BATMAN
This was just an all around weird wedding. In DC Special Series #15, Ra's Al Ghul married Batman to his daughter, Talia, without Batman's consent, because in their country, the groom does not need to say "I do."
Then, in "Son of the Demon", the two consummate their marriage. Years later, we discovered that Talia faked losing an offspring she supposedly had with Batman, and raised their son Damian Wayne in secret away from his father. Damian would then bond with his dad as the new Robin.
20 SUCCESS: ROGUE AND GAMBIT
X-Men Gold #30 was supposed to give us the wedding of the century between Shadowcat and Colossus. When the former got cold feet at the last minute, Gambit took the opportunity to propose to his long time on-again-off-again girl, Rogue.
Rogue accepts, and with the blessing of Kitty and Peter, Rogue and Gambit get married. Their newfound married life will continue to be documented in a brand new X-Men spin off series titled Mr. and Mrs. X, coming soon to book shelves near everybody.
19 DISASTER: BRUCE WAYNE AND LOIS LANE
In issue #59 of Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane, Bruce Wayne promised Superman to keep a close eye on and protect Lois Lane while he was away on a mission. Along the way, Lois came to the conclusion that Bruce Wayne was secretly Superman, and was determined to marry Bruce to prove it.
When DC's Finest learned this, they thought it would be funny if they went along with the wedding, only for Superman to show up as a guest. The pair shared a good laugh about it, but Lois wasn't too happy.
18 SUCCESS: BATMAN AND BATWOMAN
The wedding between Batman and Batwoman one of the biggest events in comics at the time. The wedding issue was originally intended to be nothing more than a dream sequence where he imagined what would happen if the elder Bats got hitched.
But they were such a hit with critics that these alternate reality storylines spawned some spin-off issues that documented a future where Batman and Batwoman's son grew up to be the new Robin, while Dick Grayson became Batman II.
17 DISASTER: RICK JONES AND MARLO JONES
Right off the bat, the entire wedding process between Marlo and Rick Jones was disastrous. First it was cancelled, then it was back on. Then, Marlo's bachelorette party included a bank heist, while Rick's bachelor party included an impromptu movie that just so happened to be starring Marlo, and a guy who was most definitely not Rick.
As for the actual wedding itself, it got crashed by several different villains, one of them being Mephisto, who came to claim Marlo's soul.
16 SUCCESS: SPIDER-MAN AND MARY JANE WATSON
Before it was written out of canon following Spidey's deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May's life, the wedding between Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson was hailed as one of the best weddings in comic book history.
Other than focusing on Peter having second thoughts all of a sudden -- at one point recalling his love for the late Gwen Stacy -- the issue was significantly dramaless, which gave readers a chance to just sit back and enjoy the mushy wushy festivities.
15 DISASTER: GREEN ARROW AND BLACK CANARY
Where to start with this one. Well, the wedding, for starters, was a total bust. Countless villains disrupted the festivities when they all swooped down and attacked all of the superheroes in attendance. Thankfully, the crisis was averted so Black Canary could marry Green Arrow that day.
Only problem was that she never actually married Green Arrow that day. During the honeymoon, Ollie tried to take out Dinah, and revealed himself to be Everyman in disguise before she put him down with an arrow. Of course, the real Green Arrow was captured during the wedding chaos.
14 SUCCESS: AQUAMAN AND MERA
Aquaman and Mera tied the knot back in 1964 in the 18th issue of Aquaman, and the two have been an ideal match for each other ever since as one of DC Comics' longest standing couples. They were actually one of the first major comic book couples to have an on-page ceremony, rather than be introduced as a married couple.
To make the occasion all the more special, the ceremony was held underwater in Atlantis, and attended by all the members of the Justice League.
13 DISASTER: NIGHTWING AND STARFIRE
After losing the Titans, Nightwing tries to bounce back by marrying Starfire and having a lovely wedding, only the wedding turned out to be anything but lovely. For starters, it's there when Nightwing learns that Batman had his back broken by Bane elsewhere.
As if that didn't put a damper on their big day, the couple are visited by an evil Raven and a future version of Nightwing who crash the wedding together. Throughout that whole ordeal, Starfire is, of course, put into a coma.
12 SUCCESS: DEADPOOL AND SHIKLAH
Deadpool is the last character any of us to have the perfect fairy tale wedding, but that's exactly what we got when he wedded Shiklah. While "The Wedding of Deadpool" is laced with The Merc's usual brand of humor, it is also surprisingly touching and driven by heartwrenching emotion.
Their relationship did not last forever -- Deadpool had his girl stolen from him by Dracula, and she quickly divorced him -- but for that one day at least, for that ceremony, everything couldn't have been better.
11 DISASTER: WONDER WOMAN AND MR. MONSTER
In an issue where Wonder Woman is asked for her hand in marriage by Steve Trevor, Merman, and Birdman, Wonder Woman settles on marrying Mr. Monster, a prince who turns into a beast on the day of his wedding. Turns out when he does a good deed, he reverts back to his handsome human self, but when he commits evil, he becomes a monster.
Rather than allow him to feel like an outcast living on the outskirts of an island, she opts to marry him instead. He winds up fleeing their wedding after realizing he preferred living in solitude.
