Every week, I will be sharing with you three comic book “easter eggs.” An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ’em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far! If you want to suggest an easter egg for a future column, e-mail me at email@example.com (do not post your suggestion in the comments section!).
Today, all the easter eggs are from Legion of Super-Heroes comics!
First off, based on a suggestion from reader Brian S., we take a look at Legends of the Legion #1, by Barry Kitson, Tom Peyer, Todd Nauck and Lary Stucker, where we see the origin of Ultra Boy (whose whole ORIGIN is an easter egg, as his name is Jo Nah and he got his powers after being swallowed by a space whale…wokka wokka).
While in the whale, Jo discovers there are other survivors….and they are alien versions of the cast of Gilligan’s Island!!
I love that they don’t think that they can ever escape. Classic little touch there.
Reader Jason pointed out this bit from Superboy #211, where artist Mike Grell has drawn a nice collection of classic spaceships in the junkyard where the Legion of Super-Heroes’ early clubhouse is found.
Finally, reader Jay Tea pointed out this bit from Legion of Super-Heroes #290, where artists Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt have brought in a tour guide who sure looks like he is a descendant of a certain archer who is about to get his own CW TV series…
Jay Tea also thinks that this panel from #293 by Giffen and Mahlstedt is also an easter egg, as perhaps the Daxamites are meant to be wearing outfits similar to other comic book characters, like Thor….
I dunno. I am not saying they’re NOT, but I also am not saying that I can definitely say that they ARE. Although the Thor one sure does look deliberate.
Okay, that is it for this week! Thanks for all the suggestions, folks!
