Every week, I will be sharing with you three comic book “easter eggs.” An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ’em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far! If you want to suggest an easter egg for a future column, e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org (do not post your suggestion in the comments section!).
Today, all the easter eggs are from Avengers comics. I’m giving you an extra easter egg this week!
First off, on the cover of Mighty Avengers #6, a certain Star Wars Droid is mixed in with the pile of Iron Man armors in the back…
Can you find him?
Next, in the pages of New Avengers #13, outgoing Avengers artist David Finch threw a shout-out to the writer of the series he was heading to next, Moon Knight, written by crime novelist Charlie Huston…
Note the book that Luke Cage is reading is Huston’s Caught Stealing…
In Avengers Forever #11 by Kurt Busiek, Roger Stern and Carlos Pacheco, Rick Jones from the future is a walking Easter Egg. He is dressed up in an outfit made up of various bits of other famous superheroes – not all of them Marvel characters!
Can you name all of the parts of his costume?
Finally, in New Avengers #8, artists Steve McNiven and Mark Morales made a bunch of jokes about the writer of the issue, Brian Michael Bendis. You see, Bendis had recently injured his eye, causing him to have to wear an eye patch for a little while. Can you find how many eye patch wearing Bendises (Bendi?) that McNiven hid on this page?
Everyone’s pal, Will, has a selection of even MORE New Avengers Easter Eggs over at Brian Michael Bendis’ messageboard here.
