All throughout July, I will be sharing with you three comic book “easter eggs” a day. An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/in-joke that a comic book creator (typically the artist) has hidden in the pages of the comic for readers to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ’em all out and enjoy! Also, click here for an archive of all the easter eggs featured so far!
Just to be the Man Who’d Letter a Thousand Pages and Fall Down at Your Door…
Yesterday, we looked at an easter egg where John Byrne sneaked in a little commemoration of the 500th page of X-Men that he had penciled. Well, today, we look at a tribute by inker Dan Green of the 100th straight X-Men issue that Tom Orzechowski lettered!
Here it is from Uncanny X-Men #225 (check out the graffiti)…
Cool stuff by Dan Green. A nice tribute to one of the all-time great letterers.
Thanks to RangeLife for the suggestion (although you should have e-mailed it!).
Ryan S. points out Orion #5, which is the big battle between Orion and Darkseid. All throughout the issue, Walter Simonson has the frames of the pages be filled with folks watching the big fight (the top side is the people from New Genesis while the bottom is the people from Apokolips). Simonson uses this opportunity (with pretty much everyone reading the issue having their sights pinned to the epic battle on the main pages) to sneak in a number of nice little cameos, including Jack Kirby himself.
Probably the funniest, though, is on the second-to-last page of the comic, where we see Apocaylpse on Apokolips!
(I made it so you can click on the image to enlarge it to make it easier to see Apocalypse)
Thanks to Ryan S. for the e-mailed suggestion!
Rats, a story in a mall?!
Randall L. (sounds like a football player) not only suggested this one by e-mail, but he even scanned the two pages FOR me!
In Impulse #27, the plot of the story takes place in a mall. As you can see from the following page, the exterior of the mall is the same as in the film Mallrats.
Later on, the Mallrats connection is made even plainer when Jay and Silent Bob stop by…
Thanks to Randall for the e-mailed suggestion and for the scans!
If you can think of an easter egg/in-joke that you would like to see me feature, drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org! DON’T make suggestions in the comments section, so as to not spoil the surprise for when I end up actually featuring your suggestion.
NOTE: A word about suggestions. I’ve gotten so many (which is great – keep ’em coming!) that I am going through them in the order that I receive them. So if you wonder why I did not credit you for a suggestion you sent in, it is because someone else sent it in first. No offense intended!
