Why Did Comic Book Companies Stop Having Corner Boxes On Their Covers?

Nowadays, comic books are entirely sold in the direct market (and generally speaking they are sold in specialty comic book stores) and the racks of specialty comic book stores tend to be designed to show the WHOLE cover...

Therefore, the top of the cover is less important and the main image is the selling point now...

Nowadays, then, if a comic book still has a corner box, it is almost entirely designed as a piece of nostalgia, like Marvel Legacy back in 2017...

So it's really just as simple as comic book cover display tactics evolving over time.
