WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Children of the Atom #6, on sale now.

The Hellfire Gala was a major event for the mutant nation of Krakoa, allowing the X-Men and their allies to bump elbows with the rest of the Marvel Universe. The party was also quietly full of plenty of dramatic moments, such as Beast and Emma Frost confronting one another over the former's recent actions and the announcement of Planet Arakko. But there were also minor moments of personal drama that came to light, such as Wild Child's lingering feelings for Aurora being complicated by her current romance with Daken.

However, it turns out there was another surprising one playing out in the background of the event -- with Kate Pryde and Colossus having a quiet reunion during the Hellfire Gala, as revealed in Children of the Atom #6 by Vita Ayala, Paco Medina, Walden Wong, David Curiel, and VC's Travis Lanham.

The brunt of the issue is focused on Carmen, one of the Children of the Atom. A group of young humans who've been inspired to heroism by the X-Men, Carmen turns out to be the only one of the group who's actually developed an X-Gene. As such, she's invited to the Hellfire Gala by Storm, and given a tour of the event. When Storm excuses herself to take part in the reveal of Arakko, Carmen ends up drifting around the party. Among the people she passes are Kate Pryde and Colossus, who are seen speaking with one another. Kate tells Colossus to come to visit her ship the Marauder so the pair can spend a night drinking. Colossus admits that it's a fun idea, and that'll have to take her up on the offer at some point.

This is quietly a big development for both mutants, who's been more or less separated from one another for a time. Colossus and Kate Pryde previously shared a long-term relationship, Kate's early crush on him during her early days with the X-Men eventually blossoming into a full romance. Both of them have had other romantic partners over the years, but there was always a standing attraction between the pair. They even came close to getting married during X-Men: Gold, but Kate broke off the wedding at the last moment following a conversation with her best friend Illyana (who is also, coincidentally, Colossus' younger sister).

Since then, the pair have gone through a great deal of soul searching and growth. Kate left behind the name "Kitty" and took a greater place in the mutant ecosystem -- becoming a member of the Hellfire Trading Corporation as the Red Queen and Captain of the Marauder, as well as taking a place on the Quiet Council. Colossus briefly served with X-Force before growing uneasy with their mission and actions, leading him to more or less retire from active duties and relocate to the quieter areas of the Savage Land, where he paints and farms along with what is implied to be a new love interest, the water-controlling mutant Kayla.

Even if their reunion during the Hellfire Gala was brief and more of a friendly hello than an invitation to pick things up where they left off, it's nice to see Kate and Pitor having made peace and at least be friends again -- especially in light of Kate Pryde seemingly embracing a more sexually open side of herself following her resurrection. Along with her near-encounter with the recently enlightened Star-Lord, Kate seemingly spent most of the Hellfire Gala encountering her ex-boyfriends.
