Colin Jost got tricked into roasting his own wife, Scarlett Johansson, during a joke swap section of Weekend Update on the most recent episode of Saturday Night Live.

During the Christmas episode of the sketch comedy series on Dec. 19, Jost and co-anchor Michael Che ended their news reports by reciting a series of jokes they had written for each other, but had not seen until airtime.

After swapping a handful of jokes about the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, their dating histories and race relations in America, Che's final joke for Jost read, "It was announced that Creed singer Scott Stapp will play Frank Sinatra in an upcoming movie, but the good news is Sammy Davis Jr. will be played by Scarlett Johansson." In the midst of reading the joke, Jost started to shake his head and tried to contain his laughter.

Che's joke was in reference to Johansson's multiple casting controversies over the past few years. The Black Widow actor previously faced criticism for her role in 2017’s Ghost in the Shell, due to the whitewashing of the film, which was based on a Japanese manga series. In 2018, she was more or less forced to exit the film Rub & Tug, following backlash for her casting as a transgender man.

Johansson appeared to stoke the fire a year later when she spoke about her decision to exit the film and told AS IF, "You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job." She continued, "I feel like it's a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions." Johansson later clarified her comments in a statement, saying, "In hindsight, I mishandled that situation. I was not sensitive, my initial reaction to it."

Jost and Johansson started dating in 2017 and became engaged in May 2019. The pair married in a small ceremony in October of this year. Johansson, who portrays Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), was previously married to actor Ryan Reynolds and journalist Romain Dauriac. She will star next in Black Widow, which was directed by Cate Shortland and also stars Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenlee and Rachel Weisz. Black Widow is scheduled to arrive in theaters May 7, 2021.
