Ending weeks of speculation, HBO has finally confirmed that Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in the second season of True Detective, the acclaimed crime anthology created by Nic Pizzolatto.

The eight-episode season follows three cops and a career criminal who must navigate a web of conspiracy following a murder. Pizzolatto has indicated the story will focus on “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.”

Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, described as a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his bosses in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Vaughn is Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his plans to move into legitimate business are upended by the murder of his partner.Additional casting will be announced later. Pizzolatto will again write all eight episodes; Fast and the Furious veteran Justin Lin will direct the first two.Production begins later this fall in California.
