The impact and influence Code Geass has had on the anime community is staggering. Code Geass not only re-invigorated the Mecha genre, but it also became a staple for any new anime fan. Code Geass ran for two seasons originally and had an original OVA called Akito the Exiled. For a while, Code Geass has been dormant as a series, but in 2019 an original Code Geass movie came out called, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection.

This showed that Code Geass did not lose any of its impact or quality over the years and fans are wondering if a continuation is in order. Could we get a Season 3 or would we get a completely new adventure in the Code Geass universe. Should Code Geass continue or should it reamain an old classic?

10 Continue: Characters

One of the most promising prospects of continuing Code Geass the characters. What are Leluch and C.C. up to and how have they changed. We can even get new characters into the mix or develop previously undeveloped characters.

Like the original anime, the allegiances change all the time and it would be very interesting to see where everyone is at. Some characters like Kallen and Nannaly have unfinished character arcs that could explored more in a continuation. Code Geass relies on its complex characters and their relationships and a continuation could really explore more avenues that ever before.

9 Stop: Animation

A long time ago, Mecha shows had some of the most impressive and jaw-dropping animation in the industry. While Code Geass never had the most polished animation, the original series and the OVA combined natural 2D animation with great cg animation for the mechs.

Many fans are wondering if a continuation of the series can maintain the great presentation and directorial style of the original series. Considering the track record of recent Mecha series not created by trigger, the likelihood of a well animated continuations to Code Geass is slim.

8 Continue: New Stories

If we were to get a new anime in the Code Geass universe there are a variety of new tales that could be told. We could get something in the vain of a anthology series where they take the themes of war, destiny, and life and use those themes to create new characters and stories. Imagine getting a new show where a boy from Japan is inspired by Lelouch and he goes on his own journey to change the world.

He could meet popular Code Geass characters and make his mark in the universe. This could structured in a similar way in how Gundam has multiple different stories with different characters in the same universe.

7 Stop: Repeating the Past

What we don't wanna see with a continuation of Code Geass is the show spinning its wheels and repeating plot points. Season 2 was guilty of this by repeating certain beats so the show could get to the interesting plot developments.

Season 3 should be a clever evolution of the characters and story, but if the show repeats what's popular and has nothing new say then the show would be a waste of time. The worst part of the recent Code Geass movie is, ironically, Lelouch's revival. Not that there wasn't anything new, but it hinted at a future where the show pulls from the past rather than creating a new future for itself.

6 Continue: The Politics

Lelouch playing chess in first episode of anime

The world of Code Geass is one of the most appealing aspects of the series. Learning about the war against Britania and Japan and all of the intricacies of social classes and racism are interesting and compelling. Code Geass was great at taking character like Lelouch and Suzaku and exploring the relationships and politics of Japan and Britania.

Every character has their allegiance and beliefs that inform their actions and philosophies. A continuation that explores more philosophies and worldviews could expound the world and make a even compelling Code Geass story.

5 Stop: Keep it a Classic

Sometimes its a good thing to let a property maintain its classic status and be remembered for its impact that it had when it was made. One reason for their not being a continuation is that it might never be as good as the original series.

Directors, composers, and voice actors change and might not bring back the same energy they gave before. A recent example of this is the reboot of Kino's Journey. Sure it had all the components that made a great reboot, but it lacked the talent and magic the original story had. It can also retroactively destroy the reputation of the original series. Like how Eureka Seven AO was a bad continuation of Eureka Seven.

4 Continue: Geass powers

Rolo uses his Geass Code Geass

Geass powers are freaking awesome! The idea of being gifted this magical power and using it to change the world is such a great thematic idea. Whenever Lelouch would use his Geass to conduct a cunning plan, it was compelling to see it in action. Other Geass users like Mao and Charles are so wildly different and present difficult challenges for the characters of Code Geass to overcome.

In a continuation series, it would be great to see more creative uses of Geass and more Geass users for the main characters to fight against and overcome. The possibilities are endless and seeing what can could come from a continuation would give anyone goosebumps.

3 Stop: Too confusing for newcomers

The biggest hurdle that a continuation of Code Geass would have to overcome is making the show accessible for newcomers. Gundam has had this problem for a long time and continues to have it to this day.

Code Geass is deeply complex show full of politics and intricate character motivations and making a third season several years without a mainline Code Geass is asking for trouble. Full Metal Panic had continuation this past year and nobody watched for that same very reason. New releases of the original show or recap movies would be needed for this to work at all.

2 Continue: Resurrection of the Mecha Genre

Suzaku uses the Lancelot

A continuous thread throughout this list is the impact it could have on the Mecha genre as whole. If done right, Code Geass could be banner title for all other mecha shows to fall under. If anyone asked, "What mecha show should I watch first?", the anime community could direct them to Code Geass.

Gundam is too vast and unapproachable for newcomers and shows like Aldnoah.Zero and Darling in the Franxx had terrible endings. Code Geass has the opportunity to be a shining title in the industry and could lead to a revival in the mecha genre as a whole. Who doesn't love for super fighting robots!

1 Stop: Fan Service the anime

anime being weird

Let's not turn Code Geass into Star Wars, yeah. The recent film was a fun time on its own, but it was a movie for the fans. It wasn't for the benefit of making new fans and cultivating a following, It was to throw a bone to the old fans. There is opportunity for growth in the series and the possibility for new stories, but if the series is going to live in its own shadow and just appease fans maybe we should make something new.

Take the best aspects of Code Geass and make something original that has artistic value. Fan service is fine as long as you continue to innovate and bring in new fans, but Code Geass isn't as spry as it once was. It's time to look at the future and make something utterly unique.
