It was announced in August that Cobra Kai had been renewed by Netflix for Season 5, and that production would begin in Atlanta this fall. This announcement came after Netflix confirmed the release window for Season 4, which is set to premiere on the streaming service on Dec. 31. A teaser for Season 4 also confirmed the return of the All Valley Karate Tournament, which was featured in the original 1984 The Karate Kid movie. Season 4 of Cobra Kai officially wrapped production in May 2021 after over three months of filming.

Hurwitz recently confirmed that there are plans for the series beyond the fifth season. As of September, he stated that "we are very deep into our Season 5 planning." He continued, "Several scripts and outlines have been written. And we are definitely writing towards an endgame, which will hopefully be beyond Season 5."

Beyond that, Heald has also revealed that the series has no intention of stopping at Season 5. "We can't believe we've filmed two seasons of the show this year," he said at the time. "In our minds, it's crazy to believe how far ahead of the story we are than what the audience has seen so far. Season 5 is another enormous season with a lot of new flavors and a lot of things that you haven't seen before yet on the show. And it's not the end."

Details surrounding Season 5 of Cobra Kai are unknown, as Season 4 has not yet premiered on Netflix. However, the fourth season will have a lot of ground to cover, as the first trailer for Season 4 saw Johnny (William Zabka) and Danny LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) prepping their students to take on the Cobra Kai dojo in the upcoming All Valley Karate tournament. The trailer also featured the return of Thomas Ian Griffith as Terry Silver, the main antagonist of the 1989 film, The Karate Kid Part III, after being alluded to throughout the first two seasons of the show.

Cobra Kai is set 34 years after the events of the original 1984 film The Karate Kid. The series originally premiered on YouTube Premium in May 2018 and, following the release of Season 2 on the platform, Netflix won a bidding war to stream the series for Season 3. Cobra Kai centers around Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Danny LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), who are now adults and senseis of their own respective dojos (Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do Karate). All three seasons are currently available to stream on Netflix.

Cobra Kai Season 4 premieres on Netflix in Dec. 31, 2021.
