WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 3 of Cobra Kai, streaming now on Netflix.

The rival Daniel LaRusso will always be most associated with is Johnny Lawrence, a bully that terrorized Daniel in high school before being soundly defeated in a junior martial arts tournament. And while this feud would be reignited at the start of Cobra Kai, running through the Netflix series as its emotional core, Season 3 delivered a reminder that someone far more lethal tormented Daniel in the original film trilogy and has resurfaced for unfinished business: Chozen Toguchi. And as Chozen and Daniel find themselves face-to-face again for the first time in over thirty years since their fateful duel, the old rivals find the one thing that has eluded Daniel and Johnny back in the States: Full reconciliation.

1986's The Karate Kid Part II had Daniel and Mister Miyagi travel to Miyagi's homeland, Okinawa, after the venerable karate sensei learned his father's health was failing. Chozen was one of the first people Daniel met in Japan, immediately developing an intense dislike for the teenage martial artist that only grew more heated as they confronted each other multiple times across Tomi Village. Humiliated by Daniel repeatedly and disgraced in his uncle and karate sensei Sato's eyes, Chozen challenged Daniel to a fight to the death, forcing the latter to accept as Chozen held Daniel's girlfriend, Kumiko, at knifepoint. Daniel managed to emerge triumphant but refused to execute Chozen when his rival was left at his mercy.

Decades later, and back in Okinawa during a business trip to Japan, Daniel reunites with Kumiko, who arranges a meeting between Chozen and his old opponent. Chozen is visibly still haunted by that brutal fight against Daniel all those years ago, reacting gruffly at first. However as the two old rivals reconnect and spar against one another in a friendly contest at Chozen's private dojo, it's clear that the deeply held animosity Chozen once harbored for Daniel has eroded with time as he helps provide guidance to Daniel, both philosophically and with a surprise round of martial arts training for Daniel to learn new techniques...but not before Chozen has some fun at Daniel's expense.

Reconciliation has always eluded Daniel and Johnny. The two have gotten close on multiple occasions across Cobra Kai's first two seasons, but it always seems just out of reach as old tensions inevitably flare up leading them to take opposite sides time and time again. Over the course of Daniel's trip to Okinawa, he and Chozen patch things up and help each other during their time together: Daniel helping Chozen lay to rest his unresolved feelings and inner demons from their last confrontation, and Chozen imparting Miyagi-Do wisdom and techniques to his old rival.

Daniel's trip to Okinawa proves that old rivalries can definitively be left in the past in a sharp contrast to his continuing feud with Johnny back in the states. Chozen is the only figure from Daniel's teenage years that actively tried to kill him, and even a hatred that ran that deep finally gave way to a surprise friendship through Miyagi-Do decades later. The door is always left for Chozen's return, but even if this is truly the last time he and Daniel ever see each other, at least the pair closed out their deadly feud on a pleasantly peaceful note.

Cobra Kai stars William Zabka, Ralph Macchio, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni Decenzo, Peyton List and Martin Kove. All three seasons are available to stream now on Netflix.
