WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 3 of Cobra Kai, streaming now on Netflix.

The one indisputable source of guidance for Daniel LaRusso has always been Mr. Miyagi. The kindly karate master trained Daniel as a young teenager to defend himself from bullies in high school, and the duo quickly formed a father-son bond. While Daniel assumed Miyagi had taught him everything he knew, a business trip back to Miyagi's homeland, Okinawa, proves otherwise. There, he not only reconnects with the origins of Miyagi-Do karate, but also receives one last surprise lesson left behind from Miyagi that ultimately saves his life.

With the LaRusso family car dealership on the brink of collapse after a rival dealer outmaneuvers them directly with their Japanese manufacturers, Daniel decides to travel to Japan for one final appeal. After meeting with the manufacturers, Daniel takes a quick detour to Okinawa for some spiritual guidance and to revisit the scenic land he and Miyagi traveled to in 1986's The Karate Kid Part II. Shortly after arriving in the Okinawa prefecture, Daniel reunites with his former love interest Kumiko and his old rival Chozen Toguchi.

As Daniel and Chozen hash out their unfinished business of over thirty years, Chozen reveals that Miyagi didn't disclose everything to Daniel before his eventual death. An incredulous Daniel accompanies Chozen to his private cliffside dojo where he shows him the ancient Miyagi-Do scrolls.

Chozen reminds Daniel that his uncle Sato and Miyagi trained under Miyagi's father. After Miyagi left Okinawa for America decades ago, Sato acquired the Miyagi-Do scrolls and passed them to Chozen after he died. After a sparring match, Chozen showcases the hidden technique that Miyagi kept from his greatest pupil.

The secret technique has the fighter target the major points on the limbs, temporarily disabling each one. Chozen displays this effectively against Daniel, who is left at Chozen's mercy. As he recovers, Daniel asks if his old bully will teach him the technique, to which Chozen happily agrees. Upon returning to the United States, Daniel demonstrates he has mastered the technique in a grueling fight against John Kreese. Disabling Kreese, the villain has little choice to give up as he is faced down by Daniel and Johnny Lawrence.

From the original movie's crane kicks and "wax on, wax off" defensive technique to the second film's drum punches, Miyagi has constantly supplied Daniel LaRusso with the martial arts moves that made him triumphant in battle. Even years after his passing, Miyagi continues to provide new secrets and life guidance for Daniel, including a brand-new fighting technique that saves him and Johnny from a vengeful Kreese. With Chozen still in possession of some of the Miyagi-Do scrolls, there may yet be additional secrets yet to be revealed.
