Cobra Kai executive producer/co-showrunner Jon Hurwitz confirmed the 2010 Karate Kid film exists in a separate universe from the Netflix series. However, there is still a connection.

When asked by /Film if the 2010 movie was in a separate universe, Hurwitz said, "Yes, we’ve ruled that out completely. Jackie Chan is mentioned in season 1 of the show as a human, so I think in our world, Jackie Chan is an actor and a performer. If the characters on our show have seen a movie called The Karate Kid, they’ve seen that one."

2010's The Karate Kid is a reboot of the 1984 film of the same name and features Jaden Smith playing 12-year-old Dre Parker, a Detroit native who moves to Beijing, China with his mother. While there, he learns martial arts from Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) and uses it to fight back against his neighborhood bullies.

Cobra Kai premiered on YouTube Premium in 2018 and after Season 2, Netflix won a bidding war to bring the series to the streaming giant for Season 3. Shortly thereafter, it was renewed for a fourth season. Set 34 years after The Karate Kid, the series centers on Johnny Lawrence and Danny LaRusso, now adults and senseis of their respective dojos: Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do Karate. Season 1 sees Johnny restarting Cobra Kai, taking on the frequently bullied Miguel as his first student, with the dojo soon gaining popularity among Miguel's classmates. Things take a turn when Miguel begins developing feelings for Daniel's daughter Samantha and Daniel takes on Johnny's estranged son Robby Keene as his own student. Season 2 then brought the original Cobra Kai sensei, John Kreese, back into the fold, and Season 3 saw Johnny and Danny join forces as they prepare to take on their shared enemy in Season 4.

COBRA KAI takes place over 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament with the continuation of the inescapable conflict between Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Season 3 finds everyone reeling in the aftermath of the violent high school brawl between their dojos, which has left Miguel in a precarious condition. While Daniel searches for answers in his past and Johnny seeks redemption, Kreese further manipulates his vulnerable students with his own vision of dominance. The soul of the Valley is at stake, and the fate of every student and sensei hangs in the balance.

Cobra Kai stars William Zabka, Ralph Macchio, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Mary Mouser, Tanner Buchanan, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni Decenzo, Peyton List and Martin Kove. Season 3 is now on Netflix.
