SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for the Cloak & Dagger Season 2 premiere.

In the Cloak & Dagger Season 2 premiere, Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson learned a terrible truth about Brigid O'Reilly. As it turns out, the diligent detective was split into two entirely different people after she was shot and tumbled backwards into the swamp. Now, Brigid must contend with her demons and her trauma to face down Mayhem, her murderous other half. This is also sure to throw a wrench into Tandy and Tyrone's crusade to stop a human trafficking ring that threatens the women of New Orleans.

Speaking to CBR, Tandy actor Olivia Holt weighed in on that massive Mayhem reveal and what it means for Season 2. She explained how she found out about the twist, why her character will feel drawn to Mayhem and how the series accomplished the special effect. She also discussed Tandy's evolving powers, the personal nature of Season 2's conflict, her "special" relationship with Tyrone and more.

CBR: Let's start with Tandy's powers. In the premiere, we see them start to expand. How does that continue to develop as the show moves forward?

Holt: Oh, it develops. [laughs] I mean, we're not just, you know, manifesting light daggers anymore or touching people to see their hopes. We're pretty light energy bombs. Really diving into the action. I mean, they both are... on a whole new level with their powers. I think a lot of it stems from what they're feeling and how their emotions are taking over what they should do with their powers. I think that's what's really interesting. We're watching them for the first time create these certain abilities, and it's pretty cool. It's intense.

Over the first two episodes, Tandy really struggles with her anger and where to put it. What inspired your approach to this?

I think what we're doing with this season, you know, we're talking about what is happening not just behind the community of New Orleans but what's going on in America, in the world. We're focusing on human trafficking. I realize it's a heavy topic, but it's also something that I think needs to be talked about -- and not just talked about, but also needs to be acted on. The fact that Tandy is going in on this situation and not shying away from it and actually taking action. I mean, she doesn't know quite how, but that's Tandy. Dives headfirst into a situation. I think, you know, she feels for these girls and she's going to do anything and everything she can to stop it.

With its focus on disappearing girls, Season 2 feels extremely personal for Tandy. How does that impact her relationship with Ty?

I think she really wants Ty to understand where she's coming from and where her head is at with all of it. I don't know if it will affect their relationship in a negative way, more than just make them stronger together. Ty already is very understanding and has the biggest heart and, you know, agrees with Tandy on a lot of things. This is something that they're definitely going to have to fight the fight together. I think he's willing to do that for Tandy and also to do it for these girls. That's what makes Tyrone so special, and really what makes Tandy and Tyrone's relationship so special. I don't think they want to jeopardize their relationship at all.

Tandy doesn't really take things with a grain of salt, and I think once she finds out about what's happening in her city, she is not going to stop at no. She is going to do anything and everything she can to stop the human trafficking, and I don't think she knows exactly how to do that. She's just going to keep going until it's over. It affects her. It affects her in a really intense way. I mean, she gets herself put into a tricky situation and I don't think she quite knows how to get out of it, but that's why she has Tyrone and they're definitely better together than they are apart, and you'll see why this season.

Speaking of female rage, there's a major twist at the end of the premiere with Brigid and Mayhem, which made me just about fall out of my chair. How did you find out about that?

We were told that we were going to split the two characters before we started shooting the season, and I sort of had the same reaction you did. I feel like I fell out. I was like, "This is not real life!" Emma [Lanaha, who plays Mayhem] most certainly crushed it and I'm genuinely impressed by everything that she brought to the table this season. You know, shooting those scenes with both Brigid and Mayhem, they were tricky but, honestly, Emma did such a great job that it really did come so effortlessly to her. We had so much fun and we had fun watching her sort of create this character.

That must have been wild to film behind the scenes. What was that like for you?

A lot of it had to do with our VFX team. In sort of the same way that we do the teleportation sequences with Aubrey [Joseph], we sort of did the same thing with Emma. When both Brigid and Mayhem were in the scene together, we would use what's called a split screen and we would have a double stand in for the counterpart of whoever Emma was playing in that moment. Then, once we were done shooting that side, she would go and switch over into Brigid or Mayhem and we would do the scene all over again but with her playing Brigid or Mayhem. It was wild! I mean, obviously we had to do twice more of the takes, but it was really fun to watch and also to shoot. I know that both Aubrey and I were really excited when we had scenes with both Brigid and Mayhem.

How does Tandy's relationship with Brigid evolve now that Mayhem is in the picture?

I think that Tandy has always felt like Brigid was a little weak, and I think -- especially after everything that happened to Brigid last season -- she thinks that even more. Then, when she meets Mayhem and sort of sees that she's the more dominant side of Brigid and is confident and holds her own and wants to get the job done, I think Tandy is intrigued by that. Tandy is going to learn a big lesson this season about how to handle herself in situations like that, but I think that at the end of the day she knows that Brigid is the one who truly is, at the core, Brigid and not this destroyer or destructive superhuman something. I think Tandy is really just trying to understand and grasp what has actually happened and also what side is she on. I think that's the question for Tandy this season.

Tandy has a renewed focus on dance in Season 2. How did you prepare for that aspect of the role?

I did a lot of weeks of intense ballet training. It was not easy! [laughs] But it was also really fun. I mean, I have gained a whole new respect for trained ballerinas, because it is some hard work. I remember our first day of shooting was actually all of my ballet scenes from [Season] 2 [episode] 1. So our first day of shooting was very, very rigorous for me. I was super drained, physically and mentally, by the end of the day, but it all turned out looking really good. I'm excited about it. I'm excited for the audience to see Tandy going back to something she is familiar with, something that made her feel alive. I think it's also her comfort, her safe zone. She goes there to let off steam, to be in her headspace and mindset that she feels most like her in. We'll definitely dive way more into that this season.
