Surprise releases aren't just for Beyonce and Cloverfield movies anymore, as today Marvel Comics debuted a new Cloak and Dagger miniseries by Dennis Hopeless and David Messina.

The release follows a teaser released earlier this week, which referenced "Shadows and Light." But while it was speculated that Marvel was gearing up for a new Cloak and Dagger series, few expected the title would debut today.

The description on comiXology is somewhat vague, but mentions that the pair have grown apart since they last saw each other yet are brought back together when a threat from their past emerges. Of note is Dagger's new costume, which incorporates the dagger motif into her neckline rather than as negative skin over her chest and stomach, as her previous costumes have been criticized by creators, including cartoonist Kate Beaton, who drew several Hark! A Vagrant strips about its inappropriateness.

The release of the new Cloak and Dagger is certainly timely, with the live-action television series debuting Thursday on Freeform. The surprise-release of the comic suggests a level of confidence in digital releases unlike anything Marvel has displayed before.

Cloak and Dagger #1, by Dennis Hopeless, David Messina, Elisabetta D'Amico and Giada Marchisio, is available now on comiXology.
