Comic Book Questions Answered – where I answer whatever questions you folks might have about comic books (feel free to e-mail questions to me at brianc@cbr.com).

Reader William M. wrote in to ask, "thank you for taking the time to answer all of our questions on comics and thank you for the great videos you provide for us, I wanted to know of Cloak and Dagger ever shared a romantic kiss on the comics?"

When Cloak and Dagger debuted in Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (by Bill Mantlo, Ed Hannigan and Jim Mooney), they didn't have much of a personal life at all. They were just mysterious new vigilantes who killed drug dealers...

Even when Spider-Man discovered their tragic origin (they were runaways who were experimented on with new drugs that killed the other runaways that they were with, but gave Tyrone and Tandy superpowers), there wasn't a whole lot of their personal lives involved...

As they continued to appear in Spectacular Spider-Man, Spidey noted that Cloak had some sort of hold over Dagger...

When they got their own ongoing series (by Mantlo, Rick Leonardi and Terry Austin), we see that even Cloak began to believe that Dagger was a bit TOO dependent on her...

However, she realized that no one loved her like Cloak and so they settled into a weird sort of co-dependent relationship for decades...

Cloak loves her and sort of puts her on to a pedestal, but she doesn't love him that way. That changed, though, in Spider-Island: Cloak and Dagger #3, by Nick Spencer and Emma Rios.

Dagger had been corrupted by the villainous Negative Man, and so Cloak kisses her and in the process changes their relationship to a romantic one while also switching their powers...

They have since broken up, so the change did not last long, but yes, eventually Cloak and Dagger did, in fact, have a romantic relationship in the comic books, but it took roughly 30 years for them to get to that point in their respective lives. Before then, it was a platonic co-dependent relationship with Cloak having unrequited feelings for Dagger.

Thanks for the question, William!
