"Sin City" star Clive Owen will play Commander Arün Filitt in Luc Besson's adaptation of Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezières' French sci-fi graphic novel series "Valerian," Deadline reports.

Besson showed reporters storyboards for the film during Comic-Con International, revealing that the film will be titled "Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets." The artwork revealed an alien futuristic landscape with all manner of bizarre creatures. The story follows five major human characters in addition to these creatures.

As announced earlier this year, Dane DeHaan ("Chronicle," "The Amazing Spider-Man 2") will play Valerian, while Cara Delevingne ("Paper Towns") has been cast as Laureline. Besson ("The Fifth Element," "Lucy") will write and direct, with Virginie Besson Silla producing on behalf of EuropaCorp.

Created in 1967 by Christin and Mezières, the influential comic series follows time-traveling hero Valerian and his sidekick Laureline, who serve as guards against temporal paradoxes and then become freelance troubleshooters when their home disappears from space-time. "Valerian" has sold more than 10 million copies in 21 languages.

"Valerian" is set to begin production at the end of the year, with a release targeted for summer 2017.
