With the massive catalog of anime out there, it becomes easy to identify common tropes that are present between different series. Not all anime can be one hundred percent original, but some end up leaning on more clichés than others do, making the inevitable ending a bit predictable as a result.

Now, this is not to say that anime that incorporate clichés are all bad; even some of the best can follow conventions at times. Regardless of the anime's overall quality, too many familiar beats and clichés can make calling the conclusion a little easy.

10 Maoyu: Romance, Economics, And Peace For All

Maoyu anime

Maoyu centers around the conflict between humans and demons. At first, the hero is sent to slay the Demon King, but discovers that the Demon King is actually a Demon Queen. So begins their journey to create lasting peace — and the romance that forms between them.

The series engages in a lot of intense worldbuilding through the history of feuding between the two sides and their respective political and economic systems, making it feel very similar to a series like Spice and Wolf. Despite the hefty order, the hero and the Demon Queen predictably accomplish their goal and get together.

9 Monster Girl Doctor: An Interesting Angle Squandered By Ecchi Tropes

Monster Girl Doctor

Monster Girl Doctor is exactly what the title implies: an anime about a doctor who treats the ailments of various monster characters. It's an interesting angle in theory, but viewers quickly noted the many tropes in this anime that are often featured in other harem and ecchi shows. Most noticeably, all of the oblivious doctor's patients, including his nurse companion, fall in love with him.

Towards the end, the good Dr. Glenn Litbeit has to treat the city's dragoness leader with an intense operation. The doctor succeeds and the dragon girl joins his harem too. The end of the season sees a typical harem ending, where the clueless lead chooses none of his admirers like so many before him.

8 Iron Man: The Superhero Beats The Obvious Villain

Iron Man anime

At first, the idea of an anime starring the popular hero Iron Man sounds like it would be a blast. However, for the bulk of the series, Iron Man is essentially a "villain of the week"-style anime where Tony has to take down the evil Zodiac organization. Nothing groundbreaking and filled with a number of clichés, like an obvious but vague main villain, a love interest with a dark secret, and a friend back for revenge.

As one could expect though, since this is an anime about the Armored Avenger himself, Iron Man beats Zodiac and its leader, Kuroda, and flies off into the sunset. Completely predictable from start to finish.

7 Sword Art Online: Kirito Saves The Day (Again)

Sword Art Online war of underworld

While Sword Art Online was the spark that lit the fuse on the recent boom in isekai anime, it's also blamed for popularizing that genre's tropes. While that point is debatable, the franchise is definitely guilty of employing those tropes, such as an overpowered yet underdeveloped protagonist who always wins, being trapped in a video game, and harem hijinks.

By the time the War of Underworld series started winding down, viewers knew the score and figured out what would probably happen: Kirito wrecking shop (again), saving the day, and earning the admiration of everyone before going home to his friends and his lover, Asuna. Unsurprisingly, that's exactly what happened.

6 Fairy Tail: The Power Of Friendships Beats Everything

team natsu fairy tail

While Fairy Tail has its dedicated fans, many viewers believe it can get a little too formulaic at times. While that doesn't make it bad, there is a case to be made about its reliance on shonen battle tropes and other things like fanservice and "the power of friendship" ruling over everything.

This even applies to the final battle and its ending, where the power of faith and one bombastic final attack ends Acnologia for good, as most could've probably guessed it would. It also leads to a "the adventure continues" type of epilogue for Team Natsu and a number of the anime's main ships being confirmed.

5 Oreimo: A Typical Tsundere Romance With A Problematic Conclusion

Kirino and Kyosuke in Oreimo.

Tsundere romance stories can be something of a tightrope walk, easily going poorly with one step in the wrong direction. While there are quite a few romance anime that managed to pull it off, some really can't and often make the tsundere love interest come off as too mean. Oreimo can definitely be considered one of those.

Oreimo is full of the same clichés found in plenty of other tsundere romance stories, but with a problematic end goal for its two leads, being that they're brother and sister. Even when other love interests are in the picture, it's pretty predictable who Kyosuke and Kirino are going to end up with just from how things are set up.

4 Infinite Stratos: Victory And A Clichéd Harem Ending

Ichika and Hoki, Infinite Stratos

Infinite Stratos tries to combine sci-fi mecha battles with the trappings of a harem comedy, and sadly it's full of tired clichés from both genres. This series stars a dense main protagonist who all the girls love and engages in trope-filled battles and ecchi-style mishaps with its female characters, who all seem more like one-note archetypes and not actual characters.

Both seasons of Infinite Stratos basically end the same way, with Ichika and company beating the bad guy with a last-minute power-up and Ichika engaging in the typical "main character can't choose" ending for his romance, but anyone could've seen that coming from a mile away.

3 Bakugan Battle Brawlers: The Power Of A Children's Game Saves The World

Preparing for a duel in Bakugan Battle Brawlers

There have been tons of different trading card game anime that all wanted a piece of that Yu-Gi-Oh! fame, and Bakugan Battle Brawlers can definitely be considered one of them. It has tropes like the skilled young player protagonist, the game being real, and villains trying to use the game to take over the world, but it plays those familiar beats well.

While Bakugan does happily engage in some harmless clichés, it doesn't make for the most surprising anime, since the good guys winning through a trading card game was all but guaranteed from the start. The first season's ending also has shades of Digimon, where the two worlds separate and the main cast has to bid their monster partners farewell.

2 The Seven Deadly Sins: One Big Happy Ending

The Seven Deadly Sins, Together

The Seven Deadly Sins stars a ragtag group of outlaw knights who reunite to save their kingdom from evil forces — or at least it was when it started. As the series went on, more and more tropes seemed to get added in and not all of them were the best choices. While it had more engaging ones like tragic backstories, hidden powers for the protagonists, and crazy techniques, it ended up including some tired ones too.

Inconsistent power scaling, redeeming villains who didn't deserved to be redeemed, and the power of friendship beating all slowly but surely made this anime more clichéd than it ever needed to be. In the end, most of the Sins get a predictably happy ending with their love interests after defeating the Demon King.

1 The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar: All The Worst Tropes Of Isekai Anime

Yuuto from The Master Of Ragnarok & Blesser Of Einherjar.

There have been a lot of isekai anime in recent years, and while many tried out some interesting and bizarre new twists on the formula, others have mostly relied on the same tropes, making certain titles blend together and come off as mediocre at best. For Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar, it's almost nothing but clichés.

A bland overpowered protagonist, a stereotypical harem who are all devoted to that protagonist, aggressively one-note villains, and so much more are all featured, creating what could be considered a "paint by numbers" isekai anime. It ends with Yuto saving the day and marrying his childhood friend, but tension basically doesn't exist in this anime. It simply couldn't have turned out any other way.
