Classroom of the Elite announced it will return for a second season five years after the first season of the psychological thriller anime first aired.

"To all the fans of "Classroom of the Elite" in the world. Thank you for your patience," promotional assistant Suzu Sakuragaoka confirmed on Twitter. "A sequel to 'Classroom of the Elite' TV anime is in the works!" Sakuragaoka also teased that more information about Season 2 will be revealed on a special live stream on KADOKAWA's anime YouTube channel on March 6. Dubbed the "Anime Project Presentation," the live stream will feature Shoya Chiba (Tribe Nine) and Yurika Kubo (Love Live!), who voice main characters Kiyotaka Ayanokoji and Kikyou Kushida, respectively.

The tweet also featured new artwork by Shunsaku Tomose, the illustrator of the Japanese light novel series from which the anime was adapted. Along with Kiyotaka and Kikyou, the new visual depicts other members of Classroom of the Elite's main cast such as the aloof Suzune Horikita and Kakeru Ryuuen, the antagonist of the series.

Written by Shōgo Kinugasa, Classroom of the Elite centers on Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, a quiet and unassuming high school student who hides his unparalleled intelligence by intentionally scoring average grades at the elite Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nuturing School. While the school appears to be a utopia, the school has a dark side where students are sorted into their classes via a ranking system, with Class D being where the school dumps its worst.

While Kiyotaka is initially content with being a member of Class D, his life changes forever when he meets fellow classmates Suzune Horikita, a girl who dreams of one day rising up the ranks to be in Class A, and class idol Kikyou Kushida, whose seemingly nice and cheerful demeanor masks something terrifying.

With over six million copies in circulation to date, Classroom of the Elite has enjoyed great popularity since the first volume of the light novel series was published under Media Factory's MF Bunko J imprint in 2015.

An anime adaptation of the first three volumes in the series produced by studio Lerche aired from July 12 to Sept. 27, 2017, for a total of 12 episodes. While Seiji Kishi (Assassination Classroom, Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School) and Code Geass' Hiroyuki Hashimoto served as joint directors of the first season, it has not yet been confirmed whether they will return to direct Season 2.

The first season of Classroom of the Elite can be streamed now on Crunchyroll and Funimation. The official English release of the light novel series is distributed in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment.
