Fushigi Yûgi is returning from its soon-to-be four-year hiatus with a brand-new one-shot in the November 2022 issue of Shogakukan's Monthly Flowers.
According to Natalie, the one-shot -- which arrives in Monthly Flowers' Sept. 28, 2022 issue --Â will both continue and close out the "Four Gods" storyline.
Fushigi Yûgi is a shojo manga written and illustrated by Yuu Watase. The manga began serialization in Shogakukan's Sho-Comi magazine in 1992 and ran until 1996. It has since led to various spinoffs, such as Fushigi Yûgi: Genbu Kaiden, which ran from 2003-2013, Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Ibun, a 51-page one-shot that released in February 2015, and Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Senki, which was released in August 2017. All of these spinoffs were released in Monthly Flowers, as well as published in English by Viz Media in North America. Fushigi Yûgi has also inspired several adaptations, such as a 52-episode anime produced by Studio Pierrot that ran from 1995-1996, a 12-episode anime produced by studio Satelight that ran in 2013, three OVAs, and several stage plays and stage musicals. In August 2018, Fushigi Yûgi: Byakko Senki went on hiatus due to Watase's health and has remained in limbo since.
Fushigi Yûgi follows two middle school students, Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo, who -- after finding a mysterious book in the library called "The Universe of The Four Gods" -- are transported to ancient China. The two find themselves as priestesses in two different enemy nations and are forced to bear the responsibilities that come with their new titles.
Announced in the January 2022 issue that was released on Nov. 27, the return of Fushigi Yûgi is one of many plans that will commemorate the 20th anniversary of Shogakukan's Monthly Flowers. Other plans include the release of a special edition of Torikae Baya, a new series called Poe no Ichizoku by Moto Hagio, a new series from Akiko Hatsu and new one-shots from Nemu Yoko and Keiko Nishi. A panel will be held on July 16-17, 2022 to commemorate the anniversary that includes Nao Iwamoto, Chiho Saito, Tamura, Akiko Hatsu and various other mangakas who will be talking to fans and signing autographs.
The new Fushigi Yûgi one-shot will mark the first installment of the manga since 2018. Fans can expect the one-shot to be available in Monthly Flowers in late 2022.
