Clark Gregg On Further Adaptations Of Palahniuk’s Novels

Although many of author Chuck Palahniuk‘s novels were optioned for films in the wake of Fight Club, only Clark Gregg’s 2008 adaptation of Choke has made the transition to the screen. While promoting the home-video release of Iron Man 2 the actor/director told Spinoff Online he would be willing to adapt another Palahniuk novel.

“I loved Chuck, I loved the experience of working on his material,” said Gregg, who plays Agent Coulson in the two Iron Man movies and the upcoming Thor. “I think he’s got a vision that is unlike anybody else’s. I vowed to myself that the next thing I made after Choke would be an original that I wrote, but as soon as that’s done, God willing, the first place I will look is to try to find another one of Chuck’s pieces to do.”

One early Palahniuk novel that has nearly been filmed is Survivor, about a lone cult-massacre survivor who steals a passenger jet and recounts his tale on the plan’s flight recorder.

Survivor would be fantastic. They tried; I’ve heard there’s been some good scripts,” Gregg said of the attempted adaptation of the novel. The film nearly happened in 2001, but was scrapped in the wake of the 9-11 attacks. Currently, director Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) is attached to direct, but there has been little movement on the project for some time.

Gregg points out that money is definitely an issue in adapting these novels. “It’s tricky,” he said. “Things change from day to day. It was even tough to get money to do Choke. I wish I could go back and make Choke with a few more million dollars. I think Survivor is one that would require a little bit of money.”

As for Gregg’s next directorial effort? He said, “[It is] a very kind of independent dark comedy, character-based thing.”
