Marvel Studios' "age-reducing" visual effects techniques allowed Ant-Man and The Wasp to convincingly flash back to the superhero heyday of Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer's characters, and is employed again in Captain Marvel to depict Samuel L. Jackson as a younger, but still world-weary, Nick Fury. We'd say that fan-favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson also took a dip in that technological fountain of youth, but actor Clark Gregg (jokingly) contends otherwise.

Following the debut on Tuesday after the first trailer for Captain Marvel, revealing Coulson in all his 1990s glory (complete with a full head of hair), one fan on Twitter observed, "Not bad age reduction VFX work." Gregg was quick to correct him, responding, "Didn’t use any. Just took a 4 day nap."

That epic nap not only smoothed the skin on the 56-year-old actor's face, but also stimulated some enviable hair growth atop his head.

In addition to introducing Brie Larson's Carol Danvers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel will mark Gregg's return to the big screen as Coulson following the character's apparent death in 2012's The Avengers. (He got better, of course, becoming central to the ABC television drama Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) The upcoming film will depicted Coulson's first super-powered assignment with the global law enforcement and espionage agency.

“He’s a relatively new S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is obsessed with MC Hammer and dresses just like him, and it makes Director Fury so angry,” Gregg recently explained. “The genie pants don’t really go with the Armani.”

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck from a script they wrote with Liz Flahive, Carly Mensch, Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Jude Law as the commander of Starforce, Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer, Gemma Chan as Minn-Erva, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, and Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau. The film arrives on March 8, 2019.
